Forty-four Detroiters had
their Jewish consciousness
raised on the recent Hatikva
Summer Singles Mission to
Israel.
Sponsored nationally by the
United Jewish Appeal and
locally by the Jewish Federa-
tion of Metropolitan Detroit,
the mission included sight-
seeing, learning and socializ-
ing with nearly 400 singles
from other Jewish corn-
munities throughout the U.S.
Lisa B. Kirsch of Birm-
ingham and Andrew J. Gold-
berg of Southfield chaired the
Detroit contingent.
Local participants in the
mission pledged $44,916 for
the 1992 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, an increase of $28,259
over 1991.
"We were able to open their
eyes about what Israel was
about," Mr. Goldberg said.
"Everybody got something
out of the mission in their
own way."
"It reaffirmed my beliefs,"
said mission participant
Steve Ehrmann of West
Bloomfield. "It strengthened
my character as a Jew and I
feel better about my Zionism,
about being a good Jew."
The son of Holocaust sur-
vivors, Mr. Ehrmann was
touched by his visit to Yad
Vashem, the Holocaust
memorial. "It really wakes
you up. It reinforces the idea
of remembering," he said.
Although he learned much
about the Holocaust from his
family, he said he was glad
other members of the mission
had the opportunity to "go
through (the Holocaust

museum) and learn things
I've been hearing all my life."
According to Detroiter
Susan E. Alterman, who
shared the national chair-
manship with Rob Glimcher
of Pittsburgh, Pa., the mis-
sion gave the participants a
"better understanding of
what's on Israeli's minds."
"You see how important
secure borders are," Ms. Alter-
man said.
The itinerary included a
cruise at Eilat where mission
participants could see the pro-
ximity of Israel's borders to
those of Egypt, Saudi Arabia
and Jordan. At Kibbutz
Misgav Am, Israel's north-
ernmost kibbutz, the group
heard about Israel's security
needs while viewing the
Lebanon terrain over the
speaker's shoulder.
To Mr." Goldberg, the special
appeal was the timing. "We
were the first large group to
come to Israel after the Per-
sian Gulf War," he said. "A lot
of people felt an obligation to
go to Israel after the war:'
The mission began with
socializing in the resort town
of Eliat "so people could get
to know each other," Ms.
Alterman said. "Good friend-
ships were forged" between
people of different com-
munities. Bonding was a
significant outcome of the
trip, Mr. Goldberg said.
"Single people became
friends and shared important
experiences." •
The 10-day trip included
visits to Detroit's Project
Renewal sister city of Yavne,
kibbutzim, absorption
