From the Golden Age in
Spain to the golden City of
Jerusalem, a group. of
Detroiters will celebrate 500
years of Jewish life Oct. 3-13.
Led by Campaign
Chairmen Lawrence Jackier
and Norman Pappas, the
Spain-Israel Mission is for
contributors of $2,500 and
over to the 1992 Allied Jewish
Campaign. The mission will
explore the art, poetry and
music of the Jews of Spain
and visit the birthplaces of
renowned Jewish scholars,
500 years after the expulsion
of the once-vibrant
community.
Participants will tour the
former Jewish sections of
Madrid, Toledo, Seville and
Cordoba. They will visit the
Santa Maria La Blanca Syn-
agogue in Madrid and par-
ticipate in special Shabbat
services in Cordoba's
Sinagoga (synagogue), built
in 1315.
In Toledo, the group will
visit the El Greco house, and
see Cordoba's Rabbi Moses
Maimonides Square with its
statue of the famous Jewish
philosopher.
Dr. Yom Tov Aziz, professor
of Spanish-Jewish history at
Hebrew University, will be
the scholar-in-residence for
the mission.
Shlomo Ben Ami, Israel's
ambassador to Spain, will
meet with the mission at
breakfast.
In Israel, the group will
meet with former Israel Presi-
dent Yitzhak Navon.
Participants will meet
newly-arrived immigrants
from the USSR, Ethiopia and
other countries.
Mission-goers will learn
UJA's role in resettling
through visits to absorption
centers and neighborhoods
where they are now living.
The group will meet a plane
of Jews from the USSR and
accompany them through
their first hours in Israel.
In Yavne, Detroit's Project
Renewal community, mission
members will learn about
ongoing projects and visit
with town residents.
Participants will confer
with Knesset members as
well as the Greek Orthodox
Patriarch of Jerusalem.
Cost of the mission includes
accommodations at five-star
hotels, round-trip airfare from
New York and most meals.
Participants will have the op-
tion of skipping the first part
of the mission and joining the
group Oct. 6 in Israel.

Wexelberg-Clouser at Federa-
tion, 965-3939, Ext. 121.
