Slavery Picture

Rome (JTA) — A startling
archaeological discovery has
cast doubt on the existence
of harsh slavery in Egypt
when the pyramids were
built and, by inference, on
the veracity of the biblical
account of Exodus.
The Turin newspaper La
Stampa reported on diggings
near the Great Pyramids of
Giza, outside Cairo, where a
city dating from 3000 BCE
has been unearthed.
It contains buildings,
graveyards, records and ar-
tifacts which indicate that
the pyramid-builders were
not slaves but decently paid
workers who enjoyed a good
standard of living, La Stam-
pa reported.
They were paid for their
labor in gold and food, accor-
ding to La Stampa, which
quotes Professor Zaki
Hawass, director of anti-
quities at Giza, who ex-
cavated the city.
The professor will elab-
orate on his findings in a
paper to be delivered at the
international conference of
Egyptologists in Turin from
Sept. 1 to 8. About 1,500 ex-
perts from 30 countries are
expected to attend.

Israeli Widow's
Flat Is Robbed

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
widow of a prominent Israeli
figure in the Iran-Contra
scandal reported that an
apartment she owns was
burglarized and secret mate-
rial, including classified
documents, tape recordings
and other papers of her late
husband, are missing.
Police are investigating
the complaint from Judy
Nir-Moses, who was married
to Amiram Nir, an adviser
on terrorism to Shimon
Peres when the Labor Party
leader was prime minister.
Mr. Nir is said to have
been an important liaison in
secret arms deals involving
the covert sale of weapons by
the United States to Iran,
the cash from which was di-
verted to finance
Nicaraguan rebels known as
Contras.
Mr. Nir is believed to have
died in an air crash in Mex-
ico in November 1987.
His widow said she
discovered the theft when
she visited the unoccupied
flat in Tel Aviv two weeks
ago. She said the room
where her late husband's
documents had been kept
was broken into.
