FAMILY VISION CARE

Roy A. Wilson, O.D.

cludes a pageant. There is
joint participation of parents
and children, who give voice
to the mute stones and bring
the events of the past alive,
according to the texts
prepared by Ofra Rimon.
There is no model of the bar
mitzvah boy carved out of
margarine; no bar with
drinks flowing freely; no
chopped liver. The ancient
stone menorah has a story to
tell, as does the engraved
script in ancient Hebrew let-
ters from the days of the pro-
phets — all this against the
impressive background of the
museum exhibits, dripping
with Jewish history in the
land of Israel.
The celebration is not just
for the boys. How do the girls
feel as they gaze upon the old
stone seals which read clear-
ly: "Abihai, daughter of
Uziyah; Ahotab, daughter of
Abila; Abigail, daughter of
Elhanan?" These young
ladies who lived here — here
— during the time of the First
Temple, were obviously
women of accomplishment.
There are always fresh ac-
quisitions, for Reuben Hecht
is constantly searching for
new finds. He is not content
merely to buy a relic from a
dealer or another collector in
Israel. His goal is to find
these things overseas and
then bring them back home
to Israel.
When he gave his collection
to Haifa University he made
one stipulation: it must be a
museum, and not a mausole-
um; a place breathing life and
hope, not a collection of dead
relics. Visitors to the aesthe-
tically arranged and fully
described exhibits will agree
that his instructions have
been carried out. ❑

New Zealand
Hunts Criminals

Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
The New Zealand govern-
ment has begun an in-
vestigation to find out if
suspected Nazi war
criminals are living in that
country, with deportation or
extradition possible if any
are found.
New Zealand Attorney
General Paul East announc-
ed that the government has
employed three researchers
to sift through available in-
formation in New Zealand
and Australia. A wider in-
vestigation would follow, if
warranted, to include East-
ern and Central European
sources, Mr. East said.
A budget of $120,000 has
been allocated for the first
year's work.
