ROSH HASHANAH GREETINGS PICK . . . THE GREETING OF YOUR CHOICE Best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year. international organization. A side-benefit has been Israel's increased stature among the world's tennis- playing powers — it recently defeated the People's Republic of China in Davis Cup com- petition and an ITC graduate, Amos Mansdorf, is a ranking professional player. Further- more, another ITC member, recently arrived Soviet player Anna Smashnova, won the junior title (14-under) in the French Open a few weeks ago. Mr. Brode, who becomes ITC board chairman later this year, declined to give the amount raised, saying only "it was about the same as last year," and that Detroit con- tinues to be among the ITC's best donor-cities. "We thought at the beginn- ing of the season that this would not be a good year for us," said Mr. Brode, but since the Persian Gulf war "there's been a dramatic change toward Israel. People seem to be more enthusiastic about giving. We are up 20 percent in contributions over last year throughout the United States." Mrs. Rabin, visiting several United States and Canadian cities to help boost ITC, spoke of tennis past and present during her Detroit stopover. The wife of Israel's former prime minister recalled how, when her husband was chief of staff in the days before the Six-Day War, she would sneak out of the house with her ten- nis racquet to an adjacent court for some tension- relieving tennis. She couldn't help worrying, however, "what will the neighbors think" about her pursuit at such a tense time. The neighbors rejoiced, she learned later. "When we saw you with your tennis rac- quet," they told her, "we relaxed because we knew another day was going to go by without war." Jumping to the present, she told the gathering of the im- pact the 11 tennis centers are having on both the newly ar- rived Soviet and Ethiopian youngsters. "The centers are taking the kids from the harsh realities of the resettlement ulpanim to beauty and love in the mid- dle of a very difficult period in their young lives," said Mrs. Rabin, who as Israel's first lady in 1977 cut the ribbon opening the first tennis center, at Ramat Hasharon. "At the centers, they can feel relaxed, free, at home. Your contributions to ITC are providing a beam of sunshine into a tough, hard-working society," she said. ❑ — NAME — # 1 Vlay the coming year be filled '16.50 with health and •aron r iw mv2 happiness for to all our friends and relatives. all our family All greetings arriving after the deadline will appear in the following week's edition. and friends. — NAME — #2 These are samples of the personal greetings being offered.
