FRIDAY, JULY 26, 1991
laying tennis in the
face of Israel's loom-
ing Six-Day War just
may have been the best thing
Leah (Mrs. Yitzhak) Rabin
ever did for her countrymen's
morale back in 1967.
The racquet sport is helping
many new Israelis feel better
about things there today, she
told some 200 Detroiters
recently.
The occasion was the an-
nual Israel Tennis Centers ex-
hibition, held at the Bingham

Eradicate With Eradico
readily gained
the acceptance —indeed the
admiration — of most of his
classmates when he enrolled
in a regular school. So, for
that matter, did 11-year-old
Renat Baruch, a wheelchair-
confined victim of cerebral
palsy. A member of the cen-
ter from the age of 3, she has
learned to swim, take part in
gymnastics and play table
tennis — even winning me-
dallions in some fields.
These achievements give
her sufficient self-confidence
to remain unflustered when,
as occasionally still hap-
pens, another child makes
fun of her handicaps. Also
helpful is the fact that she is
very bright (tests indicate
an I.Q. of 140), and so her
classmates often come to her
for help with their lessons.
Among the handicapped
youngsters at the sports
center are a sizable number
of Arabs.
The outstanding one so far
was Shaban Shatkufi, a
member of the center for 12
years until his recent death.
Shaban was a starter on the
Israeli national basketball-
team that won first place in
the 1980 Olympics for the
Handicapped that took
place in Holland.
All the young people at
the center enjoy being in its
pool and on its playing
fields, but some, like 17-
year-old Dudi Viech, are es-
pecially attracted by a more
cerebral sport — chess. Dudi
learned how to play the
game at the center when he
was 10 and now, already a
professional, he teaches the
game to other members.
The center operates on an
incredibly low budget, this
year totaling about
$750,000. This is only possi-
ble because hundreds of vol-
unteers, most of them high
school students, serve as
assistant coaches and help

the children dress, undress,
wash, eat and go to the toi-
let.
There are also older volun-
teers, among them Micha
Shuldiger, 36, an ex-soldier
wounded first in the Yom
Kippur War and later in
Lebanon.
Shuldiger works out at
nearby Beit Halochem, a far
more luxurious -sports center
established exclusively for
wounded veterans. Howev-
er, he enjoys giving a help-
ing hand to the civilians,
who, he argues, have a more
difficult time than the vet-
erans "because society is
less appreciative of their
problems."
A par
- ticularly active vol-
unteer is center alumnus
Sharon Huderland, a 38-
year-old attorney who was
stricken with polio at the
age of 2 and still cannot
walk without the aid of crut-
ches.
Huderland was for a time
the only woman on a prize-
winning wheelchair basket-
ball team that was sent to
participate in overseas corn-
petitions some years ago.
Now, too old for basketball,
she concentrates on tennis.
When Huderland isn't
volunteering at the center,
where she deals with public
relations, she might be
found at her law firm, where
she is a partner, or at home
with her husband, an econ-
omist, and two daughters.
There are, of course, pro-
grams for the handicapped
in many parts of the world,
but, said Huderland, the
center is apparently one of a
kind.
"Where my own life is
concerned, the center taught
me that I can do anything
anyone else can do,"
Huderland added. "Maybe it
will be harder for me or take
a little longer, but in the end
I will do it."
