ug. 14, the Brandeis
Used Book Sale will
again invade the cor-
ridors of Tel-12 Mall, giving
locals an opportunity to cat-
ch up on a little summer
reading.
Pearl Zeltzer, president of
the Detroit Chapter of
Brandeis University Na-
tional Women's Committee,
said the chapter offers more
than 150,000 paperbacks
and hardcovers this year — a
far cry from the days of tent
sales held behind Hudson's
at Northland Mall 30 years
ago.
The Chicago-area sale re-
mains the largest, with
Detroit trailing a respec-
table second.
The sale boasts more than
50 different categories, rang-
ing from religion to mystery
to cooking.
Clara Sziske, a volunteer
at both the sale and the
Brandeis Book Depot in Oak
Park, categorizes, indexes,
boxes and prices medical
books. The retired medical
librarian is one of 100 vol-
unteers consisting of
Brandeis members, friends
and husbands.
The libraries of Brandeis
University receive the
profits of the year-long
endeavor.
Each Monday and Tuesday
morning, Brandeis vol-
unteers collect donated
books to list and categorize
at the Book Depot. As sale
time draws close, all books
are boxed, priced and loaded
onto a truck headed for the
Tel-12 Mall.
High-school students,
mostly boys, unload the
books and set them up on
250 tables throughout the
mall. They are the only paid
workers.
Hardcover books range
from $1 to $5. Paperback
books are 50 cents and up.
Ms. Sziske said she has
seen an abundance of paper-
backs this year.
"Paperbacks pack easier,
but more people want hard-
cover," Ms. Sziske said. "But
hardcovers are getting too
expensive to give away."
The sale runs from Aug. 14
to 21. A $3 fee is charged
opening night for the oppor-
tunity to browse among the
best buys from 9:30 p.m. un-
til midnight. The remaining
six days of the sale are free
to the public during mall
hours. ❑
