Judge Thomas

The administration is con-
tinuing its persistent efforts
to win Jewish support for the
nomination of Judge
Clarence Thomas to the
Supreme Court.
That effort is beginning to
pay off; last week, Agudath
Israel of America came out
in favor of the nomination —
in large measure due to the
work of Jeffrey Zuckerman.
Mr. Zuckerman, who serv-
ed as Mr. Thomas's chief of
staff when the nominee was
chairman of the Equal
Employment Opportunity
Commission (EEOC), made a
pro-Thomas pitch to
Agudath that apparently
was right on target for the
conservative Orthodox
group.
"He made an extremely
persuasive argument that
Thomas is a gentleman of
great integrity and great
sensitivity to issues of re-
ligious liberty," said Abba
Cohen, Agudath's Washing-
ton representative. "He also
echoed what we have been
hearing in recent weeks —
that Judge Thomas's vision
of equal opportunity is based
on merit, which is consonant
with the kinds of values we
have at Agudath."
Mr. Zuckerman managed
to satisfy the Orthodox
group that Mr. Thomas's
controversial 1983 speech
praising Nation of Islam
Minister Louis Farrakhan
was a relatively innocent
mistake.
"We were satisfied that
Judge Thomas wouldn't
have made positive com-
ments about the 'self-help'
issue if he had known about
Farrakhan's anti-Semitic
views," Mr. Cohen said.

Freedom Bill
Is Slowed

The Religious Freedom
Restoration Act, a top
legislative priority for a
number of Jewish groups
this summer, continues to
inch its way through the
crowded congressional
calendar.
But the defection of the
Roman Catholic Church
from the religious freedom
coalition and lingering con-
troversy over abortion is
slowing the bill's progress
The bill would which would
overturn the Supreme
Court's decision in the so-
called "Peyote" case.
The Catholics and some
other anti-abortion groups
fear the bill could sanction
abortion in cases in which
the religious beliefs of the
mother allow it. 11
