saying they are ready to sit
at a peace conference with
Israel. And for the umpteen-
th time, the pressure is back
on Israel. Our new, good,
close personal friend, Syria's
Hafez al-Assad, heads a clos-
ed country that is a virtual
clinic of atrocities. This is a
man who many "experts"
feel is more dangerous than
Saddam Hussein. But he's
our "friend" now. And he's
said he wants peace.
Of course, last year our
summer and our barbecue
were interupted by one of
our other "friends" and
arms customers in the area
who was also telling us that
he wasn't going to invade
Kuwait. And he certainly
wasn't interested in Saudi
Arabia. I wonder what al-
Assad is thinking about?
Getting Israel out of Leb-
anon? Forcing Israel out of
Lebanon? Maybe he'll cozy
up to George and get him to
pressure Israel out. Maybe
Israel's going to be the bad
guy in all of this. Maybe .. .
Feel a drop? No. Why? Oh,
no! Why does it always rain
during a barbecue?

Rabbis Attend
Mitzvah Mission
Rabbis Irwin Groner of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek and
Lane Steinger of Temple
Emanu-El will join the UJA
gathering of American rabbis
in Israel as part of the United
Jewish Appeal's Mitzvah
Mission.
The Aug. 4-9 mission is part
of the national Operation Ex-
odus campaign, which
already has raised $420
million to help settle 250,000
Soviet Jewish immigrants in
Israel.
When Rabbis Groner and
Steinger gather with the 500
American rabbis in Israel,
they will observe the resettle-
ment process from the time
immigrants arrive at Ben-
Gurion Airport to their initial
settlement. They will speak
with those involved in absorp-
tion procedures, including
leaders in the government,
Jewish Agency and business
community.
The rabbis also will visit
social programs sponsored by
the Masorti (Conservative),
Orthodox and Progressive
