(313) 946-5700 For Reservations Calk Continued from preceding page thought Florida was too un- civilized. Moses Levy was the father of David Levy Yulee, who reclaimed the Sephardic family name and was elected Florida's first senator when it became a state in 1845. A railroad builder, attorney and plantation owner, David Levy Yulee was also the first Jew to go to Washington. That accomplishment is often credited to Sen. Judah P. Benjamin of Louisiana, but David Levy Yulee preceded him by seven years. On display at the exhibit is a copy of the David Levy Yulee's letter of resignation from the Senate and his rec- ommendation that Florida secede from the Union. The exhibit is not without kitschy Florida touches. A whole panel is devoted to old family photographs of chil- dren riding stuffed alligators. Viewers will also chuckle at Fanny Moss's seashell costume for the Jacksonville Young Men's Hebrew Association Purim Ball in 1918. Fanny and her mother collected buckets of coquina shells and stitched them like barnacles to a pink knee-length dress, cloche hat, gloves, mask and stockings. The organizers of Mosaic chose only one Sefer Torah for the exhibit. It came from Moffit, Fla., a town east of Sarasota no longer on the map. Marcus Weinkle, who ran a 2,000-acre lumber mill in Moffit, brought the Torah scroll to Moffit through Palestine and Turkey after he escaped from Russia in the 1870s. His parents buried the 14-year-old Mar- cus alive, faking his death to avoid his conscription into the Russian army for 25 years. When night fell, Mar- cus climbed out of the loosely covered grave and escaped with money, clothing and a Sefer Torah that was hidden nearby. Locating the legendary Torah scroll for the exhibit was no easy task, said Ms. Zerivitz. But that search was minor compared to the difficulty in acquiring a cer- tain Army-issue knapsack. The special satchel carried the kiddush cup and candlesticks used in the first Jewish service conducted on German soil after the libera- tion. Former U.S. Chaplain Sidney Lefkowitz, now a 90- year-old rabbi living in Jacksonville, gave the dusty old knapsack to his 10-year- old grandson, Bobby, who lent it for the exhibition. ❑
