ARTZENU YISRAEL JNF NEW LEADERSHIP MISSION TO ISRAEL November 14-24, 1991 ing fancy in Freud. Among these are a ring Freud gave to members of a secret socie- ty he established in 1913, a support group for other like- minded psychoanalysts, and a copy of the famous photo showing Freud with his cigar. There's also a letter Freud wrote in 1928, his name —Professor Dr. Freud — embossed at the top left, and his dramatic hand- writing flowing off the right- hand side of the page. Another unusual item is Freud's copy of William Jensens' Gradiva, published in 1903, the story of an ar- chaeologist who falls in love with an ancient relief of a woman. The book, which became the basis of Freud's Delusions and Dreams in Jensens' `Gradiva', is filled with Freud's handwritten notes. Unfortunately, the book is open to the fron- tispiece only and his notes are not visible to museum guests. Jewish visitors will be es- pecially interested in Die Israelitishe Bibel, a set of which Freud owned and several of which are includ- ed in the exhibit. Display notes recount that Freud received his first copy of the Bible when he was 7. It was a gift from his father. The book is filled with il- lustrations of Egyptian mythological figures. Accor- ding to the exhibit, both Freud's Jewish heritage and his relationship with his father had "a profound im- pact on his psychoanalytic theories. Some have pos- tulated that his urge to col- lect antiquities was in direct response to the multivalent void created in him by the death of his father." Surely, that's an inter- pretation Freud himself would have appreciated. ❑ NEWS I Cost of mission: $999* Minimum gift: $500 Experience the beauty, wonders and thrills of ARTZENU, our land, with the Jewish National Fund New Leadership! • TOUR THE OLD CITY • CLIMB MASADA • SWIM AND SNORKEL IN EILAT • CAMP OUT AT A BEDOUIN DESERT SITE • TRAVEL THE BURMA ROAD—ISRAEL'S LIFELINE DURING '48 WAR • VISIT A MILITARY BASE For further information or an application, please contact: Ed Rosenthal at Jewish National Fund (313) 557-6644 i PERATION ROMISED LAND THE JEWISH NATIONAL FUND *Mission subsidized by JNF Syrians Squelch Film Festival Los Angeles (JTA) — The American Film Festival that was supposed to open June 29 in Damascus but did not is this summer's puzzler for Hollywood mystery buffs. Intended as a token of im- proved relations between the United States and Syria, the film fest was abruptly called off by the Syrian authorities after weeks of organizing work by U.S. Ambassador Edward Djerejian and Najah Alator, the Syrian minister of culture. The two officials had agreed on 25 movies to be screened, including cinema classics such as The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind. There were also to be three films produced by Columbia Pictures Entertainment: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Awakenings and Glory. Three days before the opening, Mr. Alator inform- ed Mr. Djerejian that on orders from top government authorities, the three Columbia films had to be withdrawn. The ambassador refused and the festival was cancel- ed. A brief news story filed by the Reuters news agency caught the attention of Rabbi Abraham Cooper, as- sociate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. He contacted U.S. Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.), who got in touch with the State Department. The report came back that the three films were vetoed by the Syrians because Columbia was on the Arab League's secondary boycott list of companies trading with Israel. That was curious because Columbia is now owned by the Sony Corp. of Japan. Previously, the studio belonged to the Coca-Cola Company, makers of a soft drink bottled in Israel and therefore banned in most Arab countries. Possibly the Arab League boycott office failed to up- date its list, Mr. Cooper speculated; or a well- publicized event 10 days before the cancelation may have aroused the Syrian leadership's ire. On June 16, President Bush spoke at a Wiesenthal Center dinner here, honor- ing actor Arnold Schwarzen- egger for his support of its work. The president naturally referred favorably to Israel at a major Jewish function, and his remarks were re- ported by the international media. The co-chairmen of the evening were the two top men at Columbia — Peter Guber and Jon Peters. (Peters had resigned that position a few days before, but showed up anyway.
