A maven is an expert, someone
who knows what he's doing and
does it well. Someone like
Sammy Semp, seventh grade
teacher at Congregation
Beth Shalom Religious
School.
Sammy's teaching skills
are well known. Last
year, he received the
annual Schochet
Award as the area's
outstanding Jewish
educator.
But more importantly,
his knowledge of
Judaism and his
dedication to his
profession inspire his
students. They're
proud of their
Jewishness and eager to continue their learning. Many Congregation Beth Shalom
graduates participate in the Community High School.
Visit our classes. Talk to Sammy and the other faculty, students and parents.
They'll tell you why...
It's better at Congregation Beth Shalom.
Registration is now being taken for September classes (and there's a discount
for early payment). For information, call Cy Servetter, Education Director, at
547-7970.

TORAH PORTION

Pursuit Of Justice
Stressed In Torah

RABBI IRWIN GRONER

Special to The Jewish News

A

n intense sensitivity
to oppression and a
passion for justice are
part of the moral inheritance
that comes to us out of the
legacy of Judaism. This
legacy was compounded of
two major elements: the
Torah which sets forth the
fundamental ideals; and the
Talmud, which sought to con-
cretize biblical ethics in an
elaborate system of
jurisprudence.
According to Judaism, what
is the cardinal practice that
must govern all human rela-
tions? "In righteousness shalt
thou judge thy neighbor." To
the Jew, a society founded on
anything less than justice and
righteousness is unthinkable
and indefensible. "The pur-
suit of justice" rather than
"the pursuit of happiness" is
stressed in our Torah. Our
people was taught early in its
history that an unjust socie-

ty is an unhappy society. No
community whose members
are guilty of lying, cheating,
robbing, exploiting the weak
and perverting justice can
ever hope to attain stature,
dignity or lasting fulfillment.
The Hebrew term for saint is
tzadik,
literally "the
righteous one," for the noblest
attainment of an individual is
to be exemplary in his con-
duct toward his fellow man.
In this week's sedra, Moses
recapitulates in his address to
the children of Israel, the
history of their ancestors'
wanderings. He begins from
the moment 39 years pre-
viously, when their parents
had stood on the threshold of
the Promised Land. He
prepared the people for their
entry into their patrimony by
appointing leaders and of-
ficers. "And I charged your
judges at that time, saying
`Hear the causes between
your brethren, and judge
righteously between a man
and his neighbor, and the
stranger that is with him. Ye
shall not respect persons in
judgement; ye shall hear the
small and the great alike; ye
shall not be afraid of the face
