Wednesday was named
interim president for Sinai
Hospital.
Mr. Watts, 40, five'Hunter
staff members and Chief
Operating Officer Larry
Greene will comprise the
transitional management
team, expected to run the
hospital for the next six
months.
The Hunter Group, a
Chicago-based health care
consulting firm, just com-
pleted a comprehensive
analysis of Sinai's strategic,
operational and financial
situation. Hunter has been
retained by Sinai to imple-
ment a detailed performance
improvement initiative to
strengthen the hospital's
I market position and finan-
cial performance.
Meanwhile, the search for
a permanent chief executive
officer, which was put on
hold while Hunter staff
members were reviewing the
hospital, has resumed. The
Hunter Group recommended
searching for a Jewish CEO.
The hospital has not had a
chief executive officer since
the board asked Robert
Steinberg to resign in
February. The board this
week terminated three other
hospital administrators:
Paul Szilagyi, chief financial
officer; Marcia Persin, asso-
ciate administrator; and
Steven Solomon, associate
administrator.
Mr. Watts brings 10 years
of hospital administration
experience to Sinai, one of
Detroit's last remaining in-
dependent health-care
facilities.
Mr. Watts has served as
CEO of six hospitals, rang-
ing in size from 38 to 405
beds. He has served as senior
vice president of operations
for a five-hospital investor-
owned management com-
pany and as regional direc-
tor of Republic Health Corp.
During his career, Mr.
Watts has worked to im-
prove relations with physi-
cian groups. He has
implemented operating ex-
pense-reduction programs
and revenue and volume-
enhancement programs. He
has guided hospitals
through acquisitions and
has helped improve
operating margins.
