"The book explains what
the Torah says about keep-
ing kosher and Shabbat,"
Mrs. Katz said, "but without
sounding didactic or
preachy."
The two particularly ap-
preciated the way in which
Rabbi Freedman answered a
question about whether or
not Jews believe in the devil.
He said the Jewish re-
ligion has no reference to ar-
tist's conceptions of devils
with horns, red bodies and
pitchforks.
"But the Jewish religion
does have many references
to forces of evil, often called
Satan, or yetzer harah, the
evil inclination," Rabbi
Freedman wrote.
"We recognize that evil
forces in the world do exist
and are messengers of temp-
tation to do evil. However,
Jews don't believe that these
evil forces have a physical
form such as the generally
accepted image of the devil."
Rabbi Freedman, who has
six children, said he immed-
iately felt challenged and
compelled to join Mrs.
Greenberg and Mrs. Katz.
"I've spent years explain-
ing Jewish concepts and
practices to Jewish children
and adults of all ages and
backgrounds," Rabbi
Freedman said. "This was
the perfect opportunity to
organize it in a format that
is readable for children."
Mrs. Katz said she told
Prentis Hall the same thing
when they asked how this
book was different from The
Jewish Book of Why,
written by Rabbi Alfred J.
Kolatch.
"This book is made
specifically for children and
their questions," she said,
"and captures the magic and
mystery of their approach to
God and Jews."
Mrs. Katz said the book
was originally called, Why
question she always heard
from her children and their
friends.
