tured the SMA league meet
to wrap up an undisputed
overall championship.
Andover then finished se-
cond in its state regional
meet and placed fourth in the
Class B state meet.
Among Andover's other key
runners was senior Jeremy
Rodner. A third-year varsity
letterman, Rodner was the
Barons' top hurdler last
season. His best times were
15.6 in the 100 high hurdles
and 41.0 in the 300 in-
termediates. Rodner was se-
cond in the SMA meet in the
intermediate hurdles. He also
ran the first leg on Andover's
4 x 200 relay team.
Rodner, says Dian, was "an
instrumental part of the
team. He ended up being one
of the top hurdlers in the
league so it really filled a void
for us."
Junior Dan Hamburger ran
the 800 last season. His best
time was 2:05 and he placed
fifth in the SMA meet.
Senior tri-captain Dan
Rontel was Andover's top
discus and shot put man. His
best throws of the season were
141 feet in the discus and 46-1
in the shot. He was fourth in
the league in the discus.
Dain described these five as
"hard-working kids. They're
really athletes. They're in-
terested in their events and
they care about their sport
and they work at it."

Sakwa was not surprised by
Andover's success.
"We knew that we were go-
ing to have a strong team. We
knew we'd beat every team
except Troy and Southfield.
When we ran against Troy,
that was the closest meet of
the season, and we beat them.
Going against Southfield we
had a positive attitude and we
beat Southfield by even more
points."
Weitzman agreed that the
victory over Southfield bred a
"positive attitude on the
whole squad. When you lose
a lot of meets you're not up for
them; you get down. But
when you come in as a wining
team, and (opponents) know
you're a winning team, it's
better."
Andover also did well in
cross country last fall,
finishing third in the eight-
team SMA. Sakwa won the
league championship at
17:09.
"For cross country you have
to have more endurance than
speed," Sakwa explains.
Other than that character-
istic, the difference between a
good distance track runner
and a good cross country run-
ner is, again, mental. "What-
ever you like better you're go-
ing to do better," Sakwa says.
Weitzman tried cross coun-
try last fall on the advice of
his coach as a way to stay in
shape. Although Weitzman's
