"The reaction varies, but I refuse to worry about what other people think. My parents have always encouraged me to live my life for myself and not for others." Despite some of the hard- ships, Ms. Weston says she hasn't experienced any hostility from the Detroit Jewish community. "Naturally, I attract a cer- tain amount of attention when I walk into a shul," Ms. Weston said. "Some might not say anything, but they'll stare at me all the same." According to Ms. Weston, there's a large black Jewish community in Montreal and in the Crown Heights sec- tion of Brooklyn, N.Y. "What attracts attention here barely raises an eyebrow there," Ms. Weston said. Rabbi Finkelman said Kimberly has never let other people interfere with her decision. He said that's one of the reasons she chose to adopt the Hebrew name Shifra. Shifra was one of the Egyptian midwives who defied the Pharoah's edict to drown every first-born Jew- ish male. ❑ Nature's Retribution 'ed ord W. 8 Mile, Cor. of Beech Daly 532-3500 NIBBLES & NUTS 737-8088 Ms. Weston, who spends many shabbatot with Or- thodox families in Oak Park, said she studied with Rabbi Finkelman for about four years. While she said the rabbi recommended a cer- tain course of study, there is no set program a ger, or con- vert, follows. "It's a very individual pro- ecess," she said. "Rabbi Finkelman wouldn't suggest very much else. Everything, all the questions, all the in- itiative, must come from the person interested in conver- ting. It can take as long or as short as the rabbis and the person feels necessary." Rabbi Finkelman said this is a way to determine a per- son's level of sincerity. "Kimberly is a very coura- geous young woman," Rabbi Finkelman said. "She's taken on a lot and at great odds." Ms. Weston, who lives near the WSU campus, said many of her friends believe she's masochistic. "Well, they've said I'm crazy, that it's hard to be Jewish and it's hard to be black. So why would I want to be Jewish and black? Rabbi Finkelman said he warned Ms. Weston that some Jews are also racist and might not be accepting of her conversion. Telegraph & 12 Mile LESLEY PEARL Jewish News Intern W hile the rain and winds wreaked havoc on much of the community Sunday eve- ning — uprooting trees and downing power lines — Mother Nature had no chill- ing effect on the Jewish par- ty circuit. Although Congregation Beth Achim in Southfield, and West Bloomfield's Tem- ple Israel, Temple Shir Shalom and Congregation Beth Abraham Hillel Moses were unlucky enough to bear the curse of power outages, no bar or bat mitzvah or wedding celebrations had the plug pulled prematurely at the synagogues by the wicked weather. Temple Shir Shalom hosted a party Sunday afternoon, but according to secretary Stacy Finn, the soiree had broken up hours before the sky darkened. Oak Park's Temple Emanu-El, Temple Beth Shalom, Young Israel of Oak-Woods, Dovid Ben Nuchim, West Bloomfield's Temple Kol Ami and B'nai Israel, Birmingham's Tem- ple Beth El, Southfield's Shaarey Zedek and Farm- ington Hills' Adat Shalom Synagogue remained in the light, having booked no par- ties and retaining electric- ity. As of Wednesday, Temple Israel was still in the dark. Camp Tamarack at Orton- ville and the Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center day camp were not so lucky. The Maple-Drake JCC day camp disappointed happy campers by closing Monday. Power was restored late that afternoon and swimming and song-singing commenc- ed Tuesday. Both Tamarack camps, Brighton and Ortonville, were ,also plagued with power loss. Brighton's elec- tricity was restored Monday before campers arrived. Ortonville campers waited longer for light. Power was restored there on Tuesday. However, a power generator and refrigerated truck kept the kids from suffering from hunger. ❑
