Jerusalem (JTA) — The
high proportion of scientists
among immigrants from the
Soviet Union has prompted
Hebrew University to estab-
lish programs in conjunction
with local industry that will
help them develop research
concepts with commercial
applications.
The so-called "Industrial
Incubator" project to
cultivate ideas within small
teams of emigre scientists
was announced by the uni-
versity's Yissum Research
Development Co.
Yissum will establish 10
research and development
groups employing 50 recent
immigrant scientists, five to
a group.
The first group has been
formed in the field of com-
puter science in conjunction
with Scitex, an Israeli leader
in computer graphics.
The project is headed by
Professor Sorin Solomon of
the Hebrew University's
Racah Institute of Physics,
assisted by three recent im-
migrants.
Yissum has also developed
a scientific technology con-
sulting program to evaluate
proposals advanced by the
immigrant scientists.
The projects are assessed
in terms of their scientific
and commercial potential.

SUMMER MERCHANDISE
•
Rome (JTA) — A major ex-
hibition of contemporary
Israeli art opened last week
in Rome.
It features 40 works from a
private collection that Tel
Aviv University art
historian Mordechai Omer
described as the most impor-
tant display of Israeli pain-
tings ever seen here.
The exhibition is co-
sponsored by the Italian
Ministry of Culture, the
Parliamentary Association
of Italian-Israeli Friendship
and the Israeli Embassy.
The paintings, from the
collection of Israeli busi-
nessman Joseph Hackmey,
represent the work of eight
artists.
While all have attained
international stature, their
paintings, whether abstract
or representational, are
distinctively Israeli, Mr.
Omer points out in the
catalogue.
The exhibition recently
toured Peru, Germany,
Belgium and Portugal and
will go to Czechoslovakia
from Rome.
