Mid-Life Crises
Set To Comedy

MICHAEL ELKIN

Special to The Jelvish News

an cowboys, more fa-
miliar with high
anxiety than High

Noon, find happiness and a
home on the range?
Can these city slickers
saturated in fat incomes
learn to live off the fat of the
land?
More importantly, can a
trio of thirtysomething
friends — never to be
mistaken for The Magnifi-
cent Seven and all three sad-
dled with mid-life crises —
survive the perils of prairie
life?
If you're Billy Crystal,
Daniel Stern and Bruno
Kirby, the answers come in
"yups" and yaks. All three
star as middle-aged, big-city
Marlboro Men with
gunsmoke in their eyes in
City Slickers, a contem-
porary cowboy caper now
playing in area theaters.
The three jaded city boys
leave their jobs behind to
join up with a two-week
cattle drive out West, hoping
to steer clear of the self-
doubt that greets anyone
reaching 40.
What they find amid the
hills and horses during their
voyeuristic vacation is the
one thing they couldn't find
back home — themselves.
The stars — especially Mr.
Crystal, who also serves as
the movie's executive pro-
ducer — should be smiling
all the way to the bank this
summer. City Slickers is one
funny film.
Does Mr. Crystal, a Long
Island native, long for the
open spaces?
"Yeah, I felt like a cowboy
after a while,"he said of the
City Slickers shoot that
turned into a Wild West
show of comedy.
