Hebrew verb book

written in Detroit
and published more
than 20 years ago is making
a comeback, appearing
throughout Israel at
ulpanim for new Soviet im-
migrants.
A Russian version of Heb-
rew Verb Tables, written by
Detroit's first shaliach,
emissary, Asher Tarmon
and by former United Heb-
rew Schools teacher Ezri
Uval, was just published in
Israel for use by new ()him. It
was simultaneously printed
this year in English,
published by Feldheim and
available throughout the
United States.
The first chapter of this
story begins in 1959 at the
old Jewish Community
Center on Curtis and
Meyers. Then-director Irwin
Shaw was eager to promote
Hebrew language classes for
adults. He found a sympa-
thetic soul in Avraham
Avichai, Prime Minister
David Ben-Gurion's press
secretary and later student
dean at Hebrew University.
When Mr. Avichai visited
Detroit, he and Mr. Shaw
started a local Hebrew con-
versation group.
Several years later, and
after he had attended an
" ulpan, Hebrew language
seminar, in Israel, Mr. Shaw
decided to expand the
Center's Hebrew cur-
riculum. Of his interest in
the language Mr. Shaw says,
"It is an integral part of
Jewish culture."
He contacted the national
Jewish Welfare Board and
asked for a shaliach to work
in Detroit. In 1965 Asher
Tarmon, a principal in
Israel, accepted the post,
becoming the first shaliach
in the United States.
In September 1966, Mr.
Shaw and Mr. Tarmon
decided to implement in
Detroit a new audiovisual
Hebrew instruction pro-
gram, developed by the
Technion. They hired two
Israeli students at Wayne
State University and UHS
teacher Ezri Uval and began
the classes in September,
just before Rosh Hashanah.
"Usually, you start with
15 students and end up with
five," Mr. Shaw says. "But
our retention was
unbelievable, so we knew we
had something."
The program combined

written and oral broadcasts
from Israel Radio, covering
such subjects as an inter-
view with an El Al crew
whose plane had been hi-
jacked and Yitzhak Rabin
speaking about the Six-Day
War. Mr. Shaw remembers
snipping and slicing tapes
with a pair of scissors to pro-
duce a 21/2-hour program.
The project was such a
success that the men
expanded the tapes to an
international program, Heb-
rew Cassette of the Month,
with 3,000 subscribers
worldwide.
Included with the tapes
was a verb root book and
glossary developed by Mr.
Shaw, Mr. Tarmon and Mr.
Uval. The pamphlet provid-
ed students with verbs used
in the texts and their roots.
Though the Hebrew
Cassette of the Month pro-
ject would end in 1975, the
verb book was about to
expand.
"There was a Hebrew verb
table book out at the time,
but it wasn't good for
beginners," Mr. Shaw ex-
plains. "What we wanted
was an abridgement, with
words most frequently
used."
So Mr. Uval and Mr. Asher
set to work. They took the
original, small pamphlet of
verbs used with Hebrew
Cassette of the Month and
made it into a full-fledged
book. It took three months to
complete Hebrew Verb
Tables,which features
thousands of Hebrew verbs
and their conjugations.
Hebrew Verb Tables would
be in continual use at the
Center for the next several
years, where Mr. Shaw de-
veloped numerous new Heb-
rew language programs for
teen-agers and adults.
Among the most popular
was the "buddy session.
"Buddies" were required to
speak Hebrew whenever
together.
Mr. Uval and Mr. Asher
both eventually returned to
Israel. Mr. Uval accepted a
post in the linguistics
department of Hebrew Uni-
versity, while Mr. Asher
served at the JWB office in
Israel. He has since retired.
Neither man forgot Heb-
rew Verb Tables, and both
saw a perfect new use for the
book when Soviet immi-
grants began to enter the
country in the late 1970s.
Israel's Ministry of Edu-
cation decided to publish
Hebrew Verb Tables in Rus-
sian. LI
