New York (JTA) - Austrian
President Kurt Waldheim's
decision not to run for a se-
cond term has been met with
relief by Jewish organiza-
tional leaders.
Israel Singer, secretary-
general of the World Jewish
Congress, which led an
international effort to un-
cover Mr. Waldheim's Nazi
past, also said that his deci-
sion not to run for another 6-
year term as president "lifts
a great burden from
Austria."
Mr. Waldheim's decision
not to run again has been
tied to pressure from within
Austria over concern that
his re-election could hurt
Austria's attempts to join
the European Community.

Susan Kovsky, daughter of
Anne Kovsky of West Bloom-
field, is the 1991 recipient of
the Great Lakes Adviser
Association Scholarship.
Susan is entering her
sophomore year at Walled
Lake Western High School.
She has been a member of
Aliyah BBG since May of
1990 and served as chapter
secretary this year. In the
coming year, Ms. Kovsky will
serve as regional convention
chairman for her chapter.
The scholarship will enable
Ms. Kovsky to attend the
Chapter Leadership Training
Conference of BBYO for two
weeks in August at the B'nai
B'rith Beber Camp in Muk-
wonago, Wis.
