Special to The Jewish News

T

he best known and
most popular urban
oasis in the world, New
York's Central Park, covers
an area of 843 acres, between
Fifth Avenue and Central
Park West and extends from
59th to 110th Streets. Once a
barren, rocky, no-man's land,
this site was transformed,
over a period of 16 years
(1857-1873), into what is now
often considered New York's
greatest piece of architecture.
Surrounding Central Park
are some of New York's
premier attractions and many
Jewish landmarks.
Visitors to the city can
learn about Central Park
through one of the Walks and
Talks led by Urban Park
Rangers of the Department of
Parks and Recreation.
Another way to tour the
park, or part of it, is in a
horse-drawn carriage ride.
The carriages are stationed at
the Park's 59th Street
entrance.
When arriving at the Park,
head for the Dairy which
holds the Visitor Information
Center for the park. Located
at 64th Street, it houses a
miniature scale model of the
park and runs a video
presentation.
The park has several areas
that are popular with visitors,
such as Sheep Meadow (66th
to 69th Street), and
Strawberry Fields (south of
72nd and Central Park West).
The latter contains a 3 1/2 acre
International Garden of
Peace dedicated to the
memory of John Lennon.
Among the park's whim-
sical landmarks is the
Belvedere Castle, which
serves as the Central Park
Learning Center. Located at
79th Street, it features free

programs for children.
Central Park is a wonder-
land for children and for the
child in all of us. There is a
children's zoo and the Central
Park Zoo.
Children can visit the
Swedish Cottage Marionette
Theater (enter at 81st Street
and Central Park West), and
a hand-puppet show at the
Heckscher Puppet House.
The park's colorful, turn-of-
the-century carousel is one of
the largest in the country and
open on weekends.
In the summer, Central
Park becomes the stage for
hundreds of free perfor-
mances such as the New York
Shakespeare Festival at the
Delacorte Theater, the
Metropolitan Opera, and the
New York Philharmonic on
the Great Lawn and the Sum-
mer Stage, at the Mall.
Some of the world's most
impressive museums border
on Central Park. The
Metropolitan Museum of Art,
the Guggenheim and the
Jewish Museum are all on
Fifth Avenue's Museum Mile.
On the west side, near the
park is the Lincoln Center
with all its rich cultural offer-
ings and not too far to the
south is the Broadway
theater district.
For the Jewish visitor, Cen-
tral Park is a neighbor to
some of New York's most
famous synagogues. On the
west is the venerable
Shearith Israel, Spanish and.
Portuguese synagogue, the
Lincoln Square Synagogue
and the Park Avenue
Synagogue.
On the east side there are
Temple Emanuel and the
Fifth Avenue Synagogue,
along with such well-known
institutions, and landmarks,
as the 92nd Street Y and the
YIVO Institute for Jewish
Research. ❑
