Israel Gets
Observer Status

Geneva (JTA) — Israel has
been granted observer status
by the European Organiza-
tion for Nuclear Research,
with which its scientists
have been collaborating
since the late 1970s.
Israel and the center,
known internationally as
CERN, will sign an agree-
ment that will make Israeli
companies eligible to par-
ticipate in CERN projects.
Israel will be required to
contribute the equivalent of
$640,000 annually, 75 per-
cent of which will be used for
the purchase of Israeli pro-
ducts by CERN and 15 per-
cent to provide young Israeli
scientists with short periods
of training at the CERN
facilities.
The giant research project,
which straddles the Franco-
Swiss border west of Geneva,
was established in 1954 for
scientific nuclear collabora-
tion among European states
for peaceful purposes only. It
has an annual budget of
nearly $600 million.
Only European countries
are eligible for full member-
ship in CERN. Next month,
Poland will become the
organization's first Eastern
European member. Observer
status has been granted to
Turkey and Yugoslavia and,
last week, to both the Soviet
Union and Israel.
Despite Israel's having un-
til now no official status
with the center, Israeli
scientists have been working
for years at CERN's $900
million underground parti-
cle accelerator, which is
nearly 17 miles in cir-
cumference and buried more
than 300 feet below ground.

TRAVEL U.S.
U .S.ON
SENIOR PASS From $432

Washington (JTA) — Sev-
enty members of the U.S.
House of Representatives
are urging U.N. Secretary-
General Javier Perez de
Cuellar to lead the fight to
rescind the 1975 General
Assembly resolution that
denigrated Zionism as a
form of racism.
The House last week pass-
ed a foreign aid bill calling
on the Bush administration
to use "every available
means to obtain rescission"
of the resolution.
But neither the United
States nor the Israeli
government has decided to
actively seek the resolu-
tion's repeal when the 46th
U.N. General Assembly con-
venes in late September.
