Young and old. Rich and poor. Black and white. Republi- can and Democrat. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease don't discrim- inate. These two dangerous and misunderstood diseases now affect about two million Ameri- cans from every walk of life. The Bush family knows this only too well. In 1986, ulcerative colitis nearly claimed the life of the youngest Bush son, Marvin. Only surgery to remove his entire large intestine saved him. Until we find a cure, count- less others will endure the agony and humiliation of these devastating diseases. The hope is education and research. Marvin Bush and the Bush family urge you to learn more about how the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America is help- ing victims and their families. Together we can make a difference. Because the only thing shameful about these diseases is that there's still no cure. JN Good Thru July 31, 1991 I-10% OFF ALL CARRY-OUT ORDERS Li 11 • NO MINIMUM! NO MAXIMUM! BARK-A-THON Groomingtails in West Bloomfield recently spon- sored the first annual bark- ing walk-a-thon for pets and pet owners to raise funds for the Southeastern Michigan Animal Welfare Society. More than 50 people walked more than two miles in sup- K Mrs. Kogan founded the group 20 years ago because she believed a chapter with a young membership would continue to support the Jew- ish developmentally disabl- ed adults through social and recreational programs. To- day, the group has more than 100 members and has contributed $200,000 over the years to the Jewish Community Center's pro- grams for the developmen- tally disabled. Mrs. Kogan's daughter, Carole Kaftan, was the first president of the junior league. Carole Kaftan sur- prised her mom with a mov- ing testimonial that brought tears to the eyes of many of the members who were pre- sent. According to Leanie Gunsberg , director of the department of special needs at the Jewish Community Center, the group's fund- raising has opened countless opportunities for the disabl- ed. "Without them we would not be where we are today offering the many social, cultural and ongoing ac- tivities," said Ms. Gunsberg. After the recent Oneg Shabbat, the junior league is in the process of planning a summer barbecue. Top dogs: Pookie Bright and German shep- herd Lacy Amster. port of abused and abandon- ed animals.
