Plot Foiled
To Kill Herzog
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A plot to
assassinate Israeli President
Chaim Herzog during his
visit to Budapest was foiled
by Hungarian and Israeli
security agents, according to
a report in the Budapest
newspaper Mai Nap (Today)
which quoted unofficial
sources.
Israeli diplomats and
members of the presidential
party disclaimed any knowl-
edge of a plot. But Israel
Radio seemed to corroborate
the Hungarian newspaper's
story that a band of interna-
tional terrorists was round-
ed up in Budapest coinciden-
tal with the president's visit
and that security was
extraordinarily tight.
Mr. Herzog arrived in
Sofia, Bulgaria, on the se-
cond leg of his East-
European trip.
Nissan Limor, director
general of the President's
Office, who is accompanying
Mr. Herzog, told Israel Radio
that "as far as the president
is concerned, nothing
happened. He continued his
trip and is carrying on with
his planned visits."
The Budapest newspaper
said the Hungarian and
Israeli security services
were tipped of to a possible
plot.
Several people — in-
cluding one woman — who
booked rooms at the Inter-
continental Hotel in
Budapest were arrested
upon checking in after they
were found to be high on the
most-wanted list of interna-
tional terrorists, the news-
paper said.

leader of the Green Party in
Germany won a court ruling
last week enjoining a party
colleague from quoting an
anti-Semitic comment he
allegedly made during a
telephone conversation.
Hans-Christian Strobele
was forced to resign as one of
the three co-chairmen of the
ecology-minded party for
publicly expressing the view
last January that Israel
itself was responsible for the
Iraqi Scud missile attacks on
its territory during the Per-
sian Gulf war.
The Green activist never
denied making that state-
ment. But he brought former
colleague Christian Vogt-
Moykopf before a Berlin
court for having repeated his
telephone conversation.
