when their own children are old enough to begin some form of Jewish education. That's when the parents, often in their 30s, consider joining a synagogue in prep- aration for a future bar or bat mitzvah for their chil- dren. Their own bar or bat mitz- vah may have been the last ritual they performed, and the preparation for that day is often recalled with bitter memories of learning to read and chant a language they did not understand. But the pull of tradition leads these adults back into the organiz- ed -Jewish world so that their own children can repeat the experience. It is up to us to provide more meaningful answers so that we do not lose the next generation to the notion that Jewish life has nothing to offer. ❑ Compare the rest we're still the best! Dr. Alexander Blei, the prime minister's adviser on Arab affairs, announced over the weekend that Arab citizens of Israel would be accepted as volunteers for the IDF. At this stage, however, only Christian Arabs will be eligible. There are about 107,000 Christians out of an Israeli Arab population of 800,000. Dr. Blei's announcement drew a sharply negative reaction from Ibrahim Nimer Hussein, chairman of the National Committee of Arab Mayors. He objected to the artificial distinction between Christian and Moslem Arabs, noting that all are Arabs. According to Mr. Hussein, no Arab should enlist in the IDF until there is peace in the region. The only other minority allowed to volunteers are Bedouins, who serve in the IDF mostly as trackers. Israeli Druse and Circas- sians, on the other hand, are subject to compulsory military service, like the majority of Jewish citizens.
