The Art of Dry Cleaning:

Dry cleaning is the use of non-water based
(hence dry) liquids to remove soil and stains
from fabrics. All dry cleaners have access to
the same liquids but not all are as skillful in
their use. Like a master artists' skill with his
paints, we at MY Cleaners are more skilled and
achieve masterful results in dry cleaning.

One of the many reasons why knowledgeable
customers say "MY Cleaners is my cleaners."

many soldiers,
ike
Smadar Cohen wanted

to travel after com-
pleting her service in the
Israeli Army.
The 20-year-old military
commander read a news-
paper advertisement several
months ago that helped
make her desire become a
reality: Camp counselors
wanted.
Soon after mailing her
resume, Ms. Cohen started
the process of interview and
examination in Israel with
the national organization of
the Jewish Community
Center Association on sub-
jects such as Jewish culture,
English and Hebrew.
Upon acceptance to the
counselor program, she at-
tended a four-day prepara-
tion seminar on American
customs and counseling.
There she met Belson Rinat,
a 25-year-old artist, who was
also training for the pro-
gram.
Three weeks ago Ms.
Cohen and Ms. Rinat arrived
in Detroit. They work at the
Maple-Drake JCC Day
Camp as counselors in Jew-
ish culture and live with a
local Jewish family.
Although Ms. Cohen and
Ms. Rinat do not earn a
salary, their airfare to and
from Israel is paid for by a
combination of several Jew-
ish agencies.
Monday through Friday
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the
women incorporate song,
dance and games into the
learning experience, chang-
ing activities often so as not
to bore the younger campers.
One game that is popular
among the children is
"Operator" using Hebrew
words, Ms. Rinat said. One
of the counselors chooses a
Hebrew word and whispers
it in the ear of the camper
next to her. The children
continue to whisper the word
to each other down the line
until the last child an-
nounces the original word.
At the end, the words don't
always sound the way they
started, but Ms. Cohen be-
lieves the campers
"remember what we teach
them because it is fun."
Sivan Maas of the Israel
Program Center said the
Israeli counselors play a
vital role in Western Jewish
culture.
"The best way to

strengthen Jewish identity
is through connection with
Israel," she said. "And the
best way to do that is to go to
Israel. Meeting Israelis is
the next best way."
Mort Plotnick, executive
director of the Maple-Drake
JCC, said he brings Israelis
to the day camp to provide
campers with an extra
dimension not available at
other camps. Israelis have
been working summers at
the camp for more than 10
years.

The best way to
strengthen Jewish
identity is through
connection with
Israel.

"The Israeli counselors act
as Jewish role models," Ms.
Maas said.
Interacting with children
of all ages is nothing new for
either of the counselors. In
the army, Ms. Cohen trained
high school students with
behavioral problems for
future military service. Ms.
Rinat worked in an art
gallery in Israel, in addition
to her home studio, where
she often dealt with large
groups of children on field
trips.
Although the counselors
are in the United State to
aid in the cultural education
of Western children, they too
are learning.
Both women are fluent in
English and have experi-
enced no communication
problems with the campers.
However, Ms. Cohen and
Ms. Rinat said they want to
test their language skills by
attending an American
movie.
"American movies come to
Israel and run with Hebrew
subtitles," Ms. Rinat said.
"I'd like to see a movie
without the subtitles to see
how much of it I under-
stand."
At the end of the camp ses-
sions, Ms. Rinat and Ms.
Cohen plan to tour the
United States. They will
return to Israel in mid- Oc-
tober.

Don Joseph Nassi was prob-
ably the fiorst modern Zion-
ist. In the 16th century, the
Jewish leader attempted to
create an independent state
in Palestine, with Tiberias
as its capital.
