Lubavitch is requesting
special use approval for the
project and conceptual site
plan approval. A favorable
decision by the planning
commission would forward
the project to the township
board for final approval.
The project has been called
Lubavitch Town, the Cam-
pus of Living Judaism, and
now the Synagogue Campus
of Living Judaism by the
Lubavitch Foundation. The
plan calls for a synagogue,
mikvah (ritual bath) and
clergy center along Maple
Road as its first phase. A
public Judaica library, a
George and Vivian Dean
Museum of Jewish Art, dor-
mitory units designed to
look like single-family
homes and 10 two-family
housing units comprise the
second phase.
Other plans call for a day-
care facility, a conference
center and center for the el-
derly, a camp, health center
and outreach center.
The township and
Lubavitch have been
debating the issue for over a
year. The township offered
several changes to its zoning
ordinances that would re-
strict development of a col-
lege on the site. The
Lubavitch say the project is
a religious center which is
exempt from the college re-
strictions.
Another point of conten-
tion between the two groups
was a path bulldozed
through the site last year
which violated West Bloom-
field's woodlands ordinance.
The township's woodlands
board ordered Lubavitch to
allow the path to grow back
to its natural state.
Lubavitch has solicited
letters from major property
owners in the area suppor-
ting their project, as well as
letters from Mort Plotnick of
the Jewish Community
Center, Rabbis Syme, Loss
and Yedwab of Temple
Israel, Wayne County Cir-
cuit Judge Michael Stacey,
and the Greater Detroit
Interfaith Round Table of
the National Conference of
Christians and Jews.
Two owners of neighboring
homes in the area are oppos-
ed.
Rabbi Kagan and Mr.
Stulberg estimated that
ground would be broken for
the project one year after
final approval is granted by
the township. They said the
entire complex could take
34 years to develop, depen-
ding on funding. ❑
