The following year, the non-
profit Ann Arbor Holocaust
Memorial Foundation was
formed. After reviewing the
city's parks and several other
sites, foundation members
agreed that the former
Jewish cemetery, now U-M
property, would be the prefer-
red site because of its central
location and significance to
the Jewish community.
Early this year, U-M Presi-
dent James Duderstadt ap-
proved the site. A historic
marker at the north end of
the site commemorates the
cemetery, believed to be
Michigan's oldest Jewish
burial site. Started in 1850, it
was moved by the university
in 1900.
Ms. Solent hopes the
memorial will have a great
impact on U-M and other
students: "It is the perfect
spot to have (the memorial)
because a lot of young people
are coming and going and the
Holocaust is something a lot
of young people are not aware
of," she said. - "As they go to
school and notice the
memorial, maybe they will
take interest in pursuing fur-
ther and follow up with a
book or question."

tions for the memorial can be

German Aid
Has Policy Link

Bonn (JTA) — Germany
will link economic assis-
tance to Israel to progress in
the Middle East peace pro-
cess.
They privately confirmed
reports appearing in the
Israeli news media that
long-term credits to Israel
would be contingent upon
the Jewish state's efforts to
achieve peace — with par-
ticular emphasis on a halt or
freeze on the building of new
settlements in the ad-
ministered territories.
Diplomats here point out
that while Germany never
actually promised Israel fi-
nancial aid to house rew
immigrants, Chancellor
Helmut Kohl told Israeli
Foreign Minister David
Levy on a visit here in Mar-
ch that he would give
favorable consideration to
an Israeli request.
