and that was once a
19th century Jewish
cemetery, and now
belongs to the University of
Michigan, has been chosen as
the site for the Ann Arbor
Holocaust Memorial.
The site is adjacent to the
Rackham Memorial and
across from the Power Center.
The 30-member Ann Arbor
Holocaust Memorial Founda-
tion hopes to have the
$250,000 project completed by
the fall of 1992.
Larry Crockett, the founda-
tion's vice president for
development, said the
memorial site will be named
Wallenberg Plaza after Raoul
Wallenberg, a U-M graduate
who saved thousands of Jews
in Hungary toward the end of
World War II.
Roma Solent, a Holocaust
survivor and vice president of
the foundation, said, "The
memorial will be in memory
of people who perished and in
gratitude for people who
helped. That is why some of
us are alive today."
The committee is conduc-
ting an international by-
invitation design competition
and has launched a fundrais-
ing drive.
Mr. Crockett said the Ann
Arbor Holocaust Memorial
Foundation plans to raise the
money primarily within
Michigan and will also con-
tact Jewish U-M alumni.
"The University of
Michigan will be the first
public university with a
Holocaust Memorial," added
Mr. Crockett. "For in-
dividuals who are from the
university, there will be a
double emotional tie."
Although the formal fund-
raising campaign has not yet
been kicked off, contributions
have exceeded $5,000.
Mr. Crockett said an ad-
visory panel of experienced
art and design professionals
will review submissions by
about 50 artists. "We are
looking for something with
living human dimensions and
a message that is clearly
delivered," he said.
The foundation's criteria for
the design competition in-
clude that the memorial:
require minimum
•
maintenance and be resistant
to vandalism.
be intimate, not
•
monumental.
• be representational, not
abstract.
• have an immediate,
literal, human identification.
• create an environment for
reflection and meditation.
Jack Edelstein, secretary of
the foundation, said the plot
"The University of
Michigan will be
the first public
university with a
Holocaust
Memorial."
of land will be "large enough
so that a small group can use
it as a contemplation area."
Mr. Edelstein would like
the final design to have a
direct connection to Mr.
Wallenberg. He said the area
surrounding the memorial
will be landscaped and in-
clude a walkway, benches and
lighting.
Plans for a Holocaust
memorial in Ann Arbor were
originated by former Ann Ar-
bor Mayor Pro-tem Jerry
Schleicher, who is Roma
Solent's brother. In April
1989, the Ann Arbor City
Council passed a resolution to
establish a Place of Remem-
brance Commission and a
"memorial to the millions of
