John
Long

Bernstein didn't make a liv-
ing off of racing until he
became a champion in 1979.
But he was already a suc-
cessful businessman away
from the track. Bernstein
opened the Chelsea Street
Pub Restaurant in 1973. In
his six years of ownership, the
restaurant grew into a chain
of 17 establishments in five
states.
In 1980, Bernstein put
together a sponsorship
package with Budweiser and,
for the first time, he owned
his own drag racing team.
Bernstein's King Racing
Team added its first NASCAR
stock car in 1986 and debuted
in Indy car racing in 1988.
The opportunities to own
those teams, Bernsteins says,
"evolved in the business
world. I felt and still do feel
that they're good business op-
portunities."
Auto racing, Bernstein
noted, is "a very expensive
sport. Whether it be Indy
cars, NASCAR or drag racing,
it takes a lot of money to
make it happen first class and
to have the chance and oppor-
tunity to be successful. In
some cases, it's good (finan-
cially) and in some you have
to work extremely hard at it.
All in all we're happy with it."
Winning as a car owner is
not as exciting as driving to
victory, Bernstein admits,
"but it's still satisfying. When
you live, eat and breathe rac-
ing like we do and I do, when
you win at anything, as hard
as it is to win today, it means
a lot."
Bernstein says three things
will determine how long he
will continue driving. "As
long as I enjoy doing it, ob-
viously, that's the first thing.
Second is the monetary
means. You've got to have the
monetary means to do it and

do it first class. And third is
the health. If my health stays
good and those other two (con-
cerns) are positive then I'm
still here to do it."
Will Bernstein continue to
own racing cars after his driv-
ing career ends? "I would
assume at this stage of the
game, yes, that would pro-
bably be the thought today.
But who knows — by the time
that time comes when I want
to hang up the helmet, so to
speak — whether I'll be
finished then or not. More
than likely I would stay in it"
as an owner.
Of course for now his
thoughts no doubt have turn-
ed to his next drag race as
Bernstein continues his quest
for another driving cham-
pionship. 111
