newspapers. When we col-
lected enough to fill a
truck, we got someone to
gather up our respective
piles of paper and take
them over to a local junk
yard. With the eight
dollars we got for the en-

National Fund office and

correctly, four dunams of

As I look back to those
years, I begin to realize
what a radical bunch you
fellows must have been.
In the early 20s, the ex-
treme Orthodox resented
your efforts because they
thought you were trying
to ursurp the role of the
Messiah as the reclaimer
of the Holy Land. At the
same time, the extreme
Reform Jews resented
your fostering of Jewish
nationalism. If I recall
correctly, they wouldn't
even let Zionist groups
meet in the Hanna Schloss
building _ the Jewish
community's settlement
house ...

Irwin Shaw not only
reminisces. He also applies
an important historic lesson
to all Jewish experiences. He
gives emphasis to Zionist
idealism. We always learn
from the lessons of our
peoplehood, and this is the
occasion to express gratitude
to this active citizen for ad-
ding continuity to admoni-
tions for activism. ❑

D.A. Croll:
A True Statesman
One of the truly
remarkable men of the last
two generations, David Ar-
nold Croll, earned a place in
our memories. He was an in-
spiration in so many
respects that many who re-
member him in this country
and the legion of leaders
that acclaimed him for six
decades in Canada marvel-
ed that it took nearly two
weeks for his death to be an-
nounced on a global scale.
David Croll's lifelong
public service commenced
when he was a teen-ager. My
first article about him was
syndicated by the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency. It ap-
peared in the Jewish Daily
Bulletin June 24, 1934,
under the heading "Once
Humble Newsboy Becomes
Windsor Mayor; D. Arnold
Cr011 Now Canadian
Cabinet Minister."
He was 30 when he was
elected mayor of Windsor
against menacing conditions
as a Jewish candidate in
1930. As Minister of Labor
and soon as the first Jewish
senator in Canada, he dem-
onstrated his political skill
and leadership in all efforts
to aid needy and encourage
support for human causes.
Many have recollections of
his many achievements and
his Zionist involvement and
help to Israel. It can be said
without exaggeration that
David Arnold Croll was tru-
ly a statesman. ❑

Headquarters
Moves To Berlin

Bonn (JTA) — The head-
quarters of the German Jew-
ish community will follow
the government from Bonn
to Berlin, though the move
will not take place for an-
other four to five years,
community officials said this
week.
The Bundestag decided on
June 20 to make Berlin the
capital of unified Germany,
restoring the Prussian city
to the status it had before
World War
Bonn, a university town
not far from the Dutch
border, became the capital of
the West German Federal
Republic when it was formed
in 1949. Berlin remained a
divided city, the eastern part
serving as capital of the
German Democratic Repub-
lic.
Jewish officials said no
formal decision has been

made yet, but "obviously "
the headquarters of German
Jewry should be located
where the government and
parliament operate.
That includes the com-
munity's weekly newspaper,
Judische Allgemeine.
The Jewish community
presently occupies a small
residential building in
suburban Bad Godesberg, in
which it invested over
$550,000 to renovate.
The building is expected to
be sold when the community
shifts to Berlin.
The Jewish population of
Berlin, currently estimated
at about 8,000, is expected to
grow. The municipality re-
ported recently that scores of
Jewish families eligible to
regain property taken by the
Nazis or later by the East
German Communist regime
are likely to settle in Berlin.
