Shir Shalom
Wins Approval
KIMBERLY LIFTON
Staff Writer
A
fter months of delays
over parking and
traffic concerns by
the planning commission,
the West Bloomfield
Township Board of Trustees
this week unanimously ap-
proved site plans for con-
struction of Congregation
Shir Shalom.
No groundbreaking date
has been set, and congrega-
tion officials would only say
they hope to move into their
new building "as soon as
possible." Officials said they
will meet in the coming
weeks with architect
Kenneth Neumann to refine
plans before the construction
bidding process is launched.
"The congregation is very
elated over West Bloomfield
township's approval," said
David Levine, Shir Shalom
president.
"Obviously, we are quite
happy," said Rabbi Darnel
Schwartz. "The fact that the
meeting lasted only 15
minutes and was a 6-0 vote
with no comments from the
floor was a good sign.
"Each member of the
council was very good to us."
Township Hall was packed
Monday night with repre-
sentatives from Temple Shir
Shalom. Neighbors who said
the proposed site at the
southeast corner of Orchard
Lake and Walnut Lake
roads would create conges-
tion on the roads were ab-
sent.
Last August, the temple
purchased an 8.5-acre parcel
of land in West Bloomfield
for a 30,000-square-foot
temple. Planned is a 350-
seat sanctuary, social hall
and classrooms.
The decision to build a
congregation followed Shir
Shalom's massive growth
since the congregation form-
ed in 1988. Officials said it
has outgrown its
9,000-square-foot space it
rents in a Maple Road office
building. Membership has
climbed from its original 30
families to over 500 families.
No timetable has been set,
but construction is expected
to take place in two phases,
totaling $5.5 million, Mr.
Levine said. Bob Fineman,
the temple's past president,
will head fund-raising
efforts.
Although no fund-raising
plans have been determined,
Mr. Levine said he hopes a
campaign will begin
sometime this summer. ❑
