Manny Lax, 77,
Of Ida Windows

Manny Lax, 77, former
Detroiter, of Tamarac, Fla.,
died June 24.
Mr. Lax was a partner in
Ida Windows in Detroit, past
president of Adat Shalom
Synagogue and its men's club.
He was a member of Tam
O'Shanter Country Club,
B'nai B'rith, Caesarea Golf
and Country Club in Israel
and the Anti-Defamation
League.
He was United Jewish Ap-
peal and Jewish Federation
chairman at Woodlands
Country Club in Tamarac and
conducted Passover sedarim
for 20 years at Woodlands and
Hillcrest Country Club in
Hollywood.
Mr. Lax- leaves his wife,
Kathleen; daughter, Rosalind
of Chicago; sons and
daughters-in-law, Ira Lax and
Gari Stein of Ann Arbor and
Larry and Melissa of Birm-
ingham; sisters and brothers-
in-law, Helen and Manfred
Moser and Irene and Arthur
Kepes; six grandchildren. Ser-
vices and interment in
Detroit.

Betty Schwartz, 75,
Of Tyme Furniture

Betty M. Schwartz, 75, of
Oak Park, died June 20.
Mrs. Schwartz was past
president and CEO of Tyme
Furniture in Detroit, which
closed in 1978. She was a
member of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, B'nai B'rith,
Hadassah and past chairman
of the March of Dimes.
She leaves her daughter
and son-in-law, Susan and
Sydney Gartenberg of Farm-
ington Hills; sons and
daughter-in-law, Dr. David A.
of Oak Park and Robert and
Linda of West Bloomfield;
sisters and brother-in-law,
Janet Levenson of Southfield
and Harriet and Harry
Housman of Southfield; five
grandchildren.

Esther Silver,
Helped Yeshiva

Esther Silver, 87, of
Southfield, died June 13.
She was founder of Day's
Fashions in 1947 in Ham-
tramck, was a supporter of
Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and
honored with the David and
Esther Silver Jewish Na-
tional Fund Forest in Israel.
She is survived by her sons
and daughter-in-law, Joseph
and Debbie Silver of West
Bloomfield and Larry Silver
of San Francisco; sisters
Edith Landau and Anna
Lashefsky, both of Israel; one
grandson.

Meyer Levin

Baker, Developer
Meyer Levin

Meyer Levin, 86, president
emeritus of the Polisha Shul,
Congregation B'nai Israel
Beth Yehudah, died June 21.
Mr. Levin, born in Poland,
came to Detroit as a teen-
ager. He worked long hours as
a baker to bring his parents
and six siblings to Detroit.
Mr. Levin owned a chain of
bakeries which included the
Savoy Bakery on 12th Street
and the New Palace Bakery
in Hamtramck. After World
War II, he entered the
automobile business, Levin
Motor Sales, a Kaiser-Frazer
dealership. In later years he
concentrated on his real
estate development business
in partnership with his uncle,
Morris Levin.
Mr. Levin is survived by his
wife, Anne Koenig Levin;
children, Lorraine and Paul
Kales, Harold and Doris, Yale
and Anna, and Karen Block;
stepchildren, Judith and Tom
Fox, and Dr. Earl and Helen
Koenig; 18 grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren.

Benjamin Stern
Of Sunrise Supply

Benjamin Stern, 76, former
Detroiter of Sunrise, Fla.,
died June 23.
He was an executive in the
bar and janitorial supply
business, owning Sunrise
Supply for over 40 years un-
til he retired in 1981. He was
a member of Pisgah Lodge,
B'nai B'rith.
Mr. Stern leaves his wife,
Dora; daughters and son-in-
law, Marilyn of West Bloom-
field, Carole and Saul
Borlack of Farmington Hills
and Lorraine of Indialantic,
Fla.; brother and sister-in-
law, Albert and Adeline of
West Bloomfield; sister, Betty
Scheinker; three grand-
children. Services and inter-
ment in Detroit.
