AJC Head Dead At 46 New York (JTA) —Ira Silverman, the American Jewish Committee's ex- ecutive vice president from 1988 to 1990, died last week at the age of 46. He died at Roosevelt Hospital in New York of internal bleeding resulting from a parasite he con- tracted in 1989 while visiting China. Mr. Silverman had been re-elected executive vice president following an in- itial one-year term. He was serving his second term when he contracted the unusual illness, which sapped his strength and caused him to step down in July 1990. He remained with the organization as director of its Institute of Human Rela- tions. He was as firmly devoted to religious pluralism and assisting endangered Jewish communities. Isaac Wolfson, Philanthropist Jerusalem (JTA) — Funer- al services were held in Rehovot for Sir Isaac Wolfson, a prominent British Jewish philan- thropist who died at his home there at the age of 93. Mr. Wolfson, who also had a home in London, had been inactive due to illness and old age for the past several years. He lived to see his name grace institutes, neighborhoods and buildings throughout Israel. Mr. Wolfson, who owned Great Universal Stores, a retail empire in Great Britain, was one of Britain's richest men and best-known philanthropists. We are all equally at risk. Young and old. Rich and poor. Black and white. Republi- can and Democrat. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease don't discrim- inate. These two dangerous and misunderstood diseases now affect about two million Ameri- cans from every walk of life. The Bush family knows this only too well. In 1986, ulcerative colitis nearly claimed the life of the youngest Bush son, Marvin. Only surgery to remove his entire large intestine saved him. Until we find a cure, count- less others will endure the agony and humiliation of these devastating diseases. The hope is education and research. Marvin Bush and the Bush family urge you to learn more about how the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America is help- ing victims and their families. Together we can make a difference. Because the only thing shameful about these diseases is that there's still no cure. F CC4 feediv the lewik Hungry BUY A CASE OF FOOD! Use this coupon to help feed the Jewish hungry.
