DAMAGE VS IMPROVEMENT

QUESTION: How do
damages or improvements
to my property affect my
tax status?

ANSWER: Expenses from
damages to your home can
be deducted from your tax
in the year they occur.
Damage from, say, a fire or
windstorm may be partially
deductible as a casualty
loss. After subtracting in-
surance compensation and
an additional $100, any re-
maining cost over that can
be claimed as a deduction.
Improvements, such as an
added porch, finished base-
ment, etc., cannot be
deducted. However, they
can be added to the cost
basis of the house when
figuring the taxable profit
from the sale, thus reducing
it. Try to preserve cancelled
checks and receipted bills.

DAMAGES OR IM-
PROVEMENTS to your
property can affect your
tax bill in different ways.
