"War Picture, 1991", a new work by Jerome Ferretti.

Ferretti Exhibit

Xochipilli Gallery of Birm-
ingham will present a solo ex-
hibit of paintings, drawings
and sculpture by Detroiter
Jerome Ferretti. The exhibit
will open with a public recep-
tion for the artist from 3-5
p.m. June 22, 1991 and will
run through July 20.
Known for his undulating
interiors and distorted
cityscapes — usually in-
cluding Detroit imagery —
Mr. Ferretti paints in bright,
fresh colors. Memorable in
the new paintings is the large
(30" x 86") "Pet Shop Shoop-
Shoop," a pet shop with a
multitude of dog and aquari-
um accessories. Mr. Ferretti
paints the whole scene
backwards and in miniature
on the convex shoplifting mir-
ror within the painting. Par-
ticularly cynical is "War Pic-
ture," with numerous war
references: a spear-and-arrow
motif in the ethnic rugs on
the floor, a pop-art painting
on the wall depicting a fighter
jet, a television airing a
Desert Storm news report,
G.I. Joe toys strewn across the
coffee table, and Picasso's
"Guernica" replicated on a
cabinet. A wall calendar
highlights January 16, 1991,
the initiation of Operation
Desert Storm in Iraq.
Mr. Ferretti's scenes have a
"lived-in" look. Clues to the
identity of the inhabitants
abound: a wine bottle, a chess
board with a few pieces left
from an uncompleted game, a
well-known Detroit boat yard
with paint cans and caulking
tools left scattered under boat
cradles and a mug of steam-
ing coffee. Mr. Ferretti rarely
reveals the human residents
in his paintings.
In his pastel drawings peo-
ple appear active and noisy.
The colors are bolder than in
the watercolor paintings. Mr.
Ferretti shows us Detroit bar
and restaurant life and
populates his drawings with
bizarre figures. "The Barney"

affords a clue to its location —
the Eastern Market is promi-
nent in the background. The
foreground is of eating and
"schmoozing" market-goers.

The sculptures employ Mr.
Ferretti's skill as a member of
Local #35 Bricklayers Union.
The painted brick "Riot Col-
umn" and "Freedom Col-
umn" create three-dimen-
sional cityscapes. More brick-
work occurs in the brilliantly-
colored "Crazy Guy Arch"
ready to be installed as a pun-
chy fireplace opening.
Trained at the Center for
Creative Studies and Wayne
State University, Mr. Ferret-
ti has exhibited at the D.I.A.
and in many regional shows
and has received a fellowship
from the Bemis Foundation.
He will be artist in residence
in Omaha, Neb., next winter.
Xochipilli Gallery is located
