NCJW Celebrates
A Century of Service

he National Council of
Jewish Women
Greater Detroit Sec-
tion held a 100-year gala
celebration at the Jewish
Community Center on June
11. About 300 guests attend-
ed the cocktail reception and
dinner to view the archives
exhibit, see a multi-media
historical presentation and
hear guest speaker Linda
Ellerbee. The gala chair-
man was Shelly Cooper ,
while the centennial
chairmen were Barbara
Grant and Helen Shevin.
The archives exhibit,
located in the JCC lobby un-
til June 30, features NCJW
memorabilia from the last
100 years. From the first
president, Ida E. Ginsberg,
to the present, Carol Sue
Coden , from penny lunches
to Meals on Wheels, from the
12th Street Council Center
to the Angel Balls at the
Raleigh House, the display
set up by Dorothy Kauf-
man and her committee
presents an overview of this
hard-working group
dedicated to education, so-
cial action and service.
John Mayer of Bloom-
field Hills, who attended the
event, is the grandson of the
first president, Ida E.
Ginsberg. He remembers
when his mother, Golda
Krolik, cut the cake at the
85th anniversary celebra-
tion. He related the anecdote
about his mother claiming
she was at the founding
meeting. When someone in-
formed her that it was im-
possible because she wasn't
born yet, Mrs. Krolik ex-
claimed, "I was in my
mother's womb."
Barbara Grant, a
centennial chairman, beam-
ed as she walked through
the exhibit noting the suc-
cessful programs. "Our big-
gest success is Orchards,
which started as a residence
for seven and now is a multi-
million dollar Oakland
County agency. It has been
independent for the last five
years."
Another evening highlight
was the multi-media presen-
tation describing the
wonderful efforts of NCJW,
written and produced by
Lisa Brody. "It's wonderful
to be able to share with the
community the 100 years of
service and organization and
show how we make a differ-

Discovery Ball on June 7 at
the Ritz Carlton. Some of the
