nuing to believe that Shab-
betai was the Messiah. So
powerfully did they cling to
this belief that they survived
as a distinct and separate
Islamic sect through WWI.
In Eastern Europe,
decades after Shabbetai's
death, a scoundrel by the
name of Jacob Frank claim-
ed to be his successor. He
organized a movement that
asserted that Jewish laws
were voided in the new Mes-
sianic age. Frank even
organized wife-swapping
orgies, which quickly led to
his ostracism and persecu-
tion by the organized Jewish
community. In 1759, the
Frankists converted en
masse to Catholicism,
whereupon they charged
their former co-religionists
with murdering Christians
and drinking their blood.
Most Jews, of course,
stopped believing that
Shabbetai was the Messiah
when they heard about his
conversion to Islam.
Did any good at all come
from this sorry episode? Ger-
shorn Scholem, the great
scholar of kabbalah and the
author of a thousand-page
biography of Shabbetai,
argues that, for a few mon-
ths in 1665-1666, world
Jewry was united in believ-
ing that it was about to be
redeemed and restored to
Palestine. The brief taste of
what freedom might be like
made it impossible for many
Jews — even after Shabbetai
was revealed as a false Mes-
siah — to go on passively ac-
cepting their powerless sta-
tus quo. Scholem sees Zion-
ism and the Jewish struggle
for equal rights as in some
measure resulting from the
social and religious
upheaval produced by
"Sabbatianism."
As for the "Messiah"
himself, was he a malevolent
fraud or a madman? Some
contemporary analyses
speculate that Shabbetai
was severely manic-
depressive. It does seem
to conform to the biograph-
ical and anecdotal accounts
we have of his life, in
which periods of exulta-
tion alternate with periods
of withdrawal and deep
depression. It is possible that
Shabbetai anticipated his
meeting with the sultan in
just such a mood of exulta-
tion, expecting that he
would be handed Palestine.
Unfortunately, the sultan's
threat very quickly dropped
him from manic heights to
terror and depression. He
lived only ten more years
after his conversion, dying
in exile in Albania. ❑
