NISSAN
was one of my leaders out
there."
During the team's last
three years together, when
Wolfe was 16-18, the team
compiled a 58-4 record and
played for the state Connie
Mack League championships,
finishing second twice and
third overall.
After finishing high school,
Wolfe received a full scholar-
ship to Indiana, after he im-
pressed head coach Morgan
with his hitting and versatili-
ty in the field during a tryout
with the Kansas City Royals.
He had a relatively im-
pressive freshman season,
after being red-shirted, and
batted .315, with one homer
and 30 RBI's as a catcher. But
he injured his throwing arm,
and was switched to first base
for his sophomore year, then
to right field for his junior
year. It was also around this
time that Marty got a taste of
the pressure to perform in
Division I college baseball.
Coach Morgan seemed to
want and expect more from
him.
"I was really surprised at
what he expected from me, as
well as from all of the other
freshmen so soon, but I learn-
ed quickly that you really do
have to produce, and there are
no excuses," said Wolfe.
Off the field, Wolfe is a
business management major,
carrying a B average, with an
eye on the marketing and
advertising field.
"Believe it or not, baseball
has helped me in my studies
in that it makes me budget
my time more effectively," he
said. Wolfe plans to return to
campus this fall to finish out
his last semester, and to play
with the baseball team again
next spring, completing his
eligibility.
Of all of the positions that
Wolfe has played, catcher is
his favorite position because
"you are the leader out there,
you call the shots." His big-
gest joy in baseball is hitting,
especially when he gets all of
one.
Though Marty has one
more year of eligibility, some
major league teams have
made inquiries about him, in-
cluding the Milwaukee
Brewers, the Minnesota
Twins and the Texas Rangers.
"I really think that he has
a shot," Lieberman said.
"He's got size, speed, hitting
ability and most important,
versatility. He loves pressure,
he gets his swings, and he's
never intimidated. A major
league team should take a
chance with him. A good bat-
ting instructor will see his
potential and make him a
productive player, if not a
star." ❑
