gusto for verbally skewering
his critics, have made him
an intellectual outsider in
his own community.
"How is he thought of?
Very poorly," said Faris
Brouhafa, director of public
affairs for the Arab-
American Institute in Wash-
ington. "He does not reflect
the viewpoint of the Arab-
American community or the
Arab intelligentsia in this
country.
"What's particularly
upsetting to many Arabs is
that he is presented as an ob-
jective observer of the Mid-
dle East scene, or worse, of
being reflective of the Arab
view."
In response, Mr. Ajami
said he was "not chastened
by this criticism, because I
believe it stems from Arab-
Americans feeling they
somehow have to toe the or-
thodox line. They really are
out of touch with the real
dilemmas of the Arab world.
He was — and remains —
an unabashed hawk when it
comes to Saddam Hussein.
His only complaint about
the war is that the Iraqi
leader survived.
"Had we gone all the way
to Baghdad, what would
have happened is that (Gen.
Norman) Schwarzkopf would
have been mobbed. No one
would have shed a tear for
Saddam Hussein."
But the U.S.-led coalition
choose to halt the military
action with Saddam still in
power, and Mr. Ajami said
that decision was made as a
concession to Turkey. That
nation feared Saddam's
departure would have
strengthened the Kurdish
hand to the point that
Turkey's Kurdish minority
would have also begun to
agitate for self-
determination.
As a result, "we ended up
with the kind of uncertain
peace that we now have" in
the Middle East.
And that, Mr. Ajami said,
prompted a politically un-
fulfilled White House to seek
some sort of clear victory in
relation to Israel and its
Arab antagonists.
"Bush made all the right
calls during the Gulf war,
but then suddenly when it
was time for him to run the
victory lap he left the Gulf
for the Mediterranean," Mr.
Ajami said. "There was no
push in the Gulf for a Pales-
tinian settlement. The Gulf
Arabs were fed up with the
Palestinians for supporting
Iraq. "The truth of the
matter is this war did
nothing to make a settle-
ment in the Israeli-Pales-
tinian conflict possible." ❑

Chiropractic Health Hints

WITH DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C.

DISC PROBLEMS

The spinal discs are cartilage pads which sit between the vertebra
and provide most of the flexibility to the spine. Without the discs, the
spine would be a rigid column of bone not capable of bending.
The mobility that the spinal discs add to the spinal column is,
however, not without some drawbacks. By being soft and therefore flex-
ible, the spinal discs are prone to "wear" with time and aging. This
"wearing" process usually begins in the third decade of life; and disc
disorders causing back and leg pain are common in adults over
the age of 30.
As the discs wear with age, they become prone to bulging or "slipping" out of place caus-
ing back pain and often pain radiating down one or both legs. A slipped or herniated disc
is perhaps the most common reason for which people have back surgery. Fortunately, other
treatment alternatives such as chiropractic manipulation are available for the treatment
of disc disorders.
Many patients receiving this type of treatment will be able to avoid difficult back surgery.
Our office takes great pride in providing the best care available for those suffering from
disc symptoms and associated pain.
