ohn Dudley accepted
his Jewish Family
Service staffer of the
year award last week in
front of a room of emotional-
ly charged colleagues who
all stood up and gave him a
standing ovation.
Mr. Dudley, who joined
JFS in 1978, is not a case
worker, nor does he counsel
a load of troubled clients.
Mr. Dudley, 59, is the JFS
building manager, and he's
the one upon whom both
clients and professionals de-
pend. He compares his job to
the land crew that prepares
each plane for lift-off.
According to Mr. Dudley,
an efficient, well-run
building is as necessary to
the people it serves as a fine-
ly tuned aircraft is to the
people it carries.
"You have to imagine all
the (JFS) social workers as
the pilot," said Mr. Dudley,
who also serves as Deacon at
the Greater Ephesian Bap-
tist Church. "The pilot takes
the plane into the air to a
certain destination.
"But before the pilot can
do his job, the plane has to be
in perfect order for him to
take off and land safely," he
said. "I make sure every-
thing in the building works
so the other staff can do their
jobs of helping people."
Mr. Dudley, who was born
in Montgomery, Ala., lives
in Clarendon with his wife,
Gloria, and daughters,
Nicole, 19, Letisha, 16, and
Matoya, 16. Before he came
to Detroit, he supervised a
building crew in New York
City for 17 years. He said he
left New York to be closer to
his ailing mother. He said he
always had a dream to work

for a Jewish Family Service.
"When I was in New York,
I used to pass a JFS on the
west side of Manhattan,"
Mr. Dudley said. "It seemed
like a friendly place and I
liked the idea of helping
people, especially older
folks."
Mr. Dudley said the big-
gest change he's seen
happen to the building in the
last 13 years, was when the
Israel Bond office left and
the Resettlement Service
moved in.
"We needed all that room,
especially upstairs," Mr.
Dudley said. "We get so
many Russians in town, I
don't know where they put
them all."
JFS President, John
Jacobs, who presented the
award, said Mr. Dudley is
the first to arrive each morn-
ing and the last to leave.
Mr. Jacobs also presented
Bette Utchenik with the JFS
volunteer of the year award.
"John opens the building
and checks that nothing's
been tampered with," Mr.
Jacobs said. "He fixes
almost everything, makes
coffee for everybody and sets
up rooms for meetings. He
often picks up medications
and even drives to the air-
port to pick up Soviet Jews."
When Mr. Dudley isn't
working, he sings the gospel
in his church choir.
These days, Mr. Dudley
likes to spend time with his
oldest daughter, Jacklyn,
who attends law school in
Detroit, and his two grand-
daughters, Lena, 13, and
Niko, who is 3 months old.
"John is always helping
people," said Mr. Jacobs,
who presented Mr. Dudley
with the staffer of the year
award. "His family counts
on him just as much as his
JFS family does." ❑
