"People feel so good about
having an identity to a
fund," Mr. Maddin said.
Horizons funds can be set
up in two ways: through
estate planning and
throughout a lifetime. Do-
nors can begin an endow-
ment by signing a letter of
intent with UJC — an
agreement to create a fund
in a name.
Cash, privately or publicly
held stock or property can be
transferred to this fund. The
transfer can come from ex-
isting philanthropic funds
and private foundations.

Tosch, Macon
Win In Hills

KIMBERLY LIFTON

T

he buzz words "back to
basics" took a
backseat in Monday's
school board election in
Bloomfield Hills as incum-
bent Sharon Tosch and
newcomer Debbie Macon
won two hotly contested
four-year terms.
Mrs. Tosch, a supporter of
the district's experimental
Model High School, secured
the most votes with 1,672.
Mrs. Macon, a mother of a
student at the model school,
placed second with 1,139
votes.
Other board candidates
ran campaigns calling for a
back-to-basics movement, a
statement that frightened
many parents who feared re-
ligion in the schools might
be a hidden agenda item.
Parent Mindy Nathan has
said back-to-basics is rhet-
oric that signals "red flags
in the Jewish community."
In West Bloomfield, a con-
troversial millage proposal
passed. There, voters ap-
proved the right to levy an
additional 2.3 mills.
Without the millage, sup-
porters feared the school
district would face $4.4 mill-
ion in budget cuts,
automatically reducing and
cutting many programs, and
eliminating at least 50
teachers.
Winning board positions
were incumbent Jeffrey
Stewart and newcomer
Bruce Tobin.
In Southfield, Steve
Kaplan retained his seat,
securing another four-year
position. And Larry Wright
won a two-year term.
In Oak Park, Leslie
Biederman and Robert Lake
each won a four-year school
board term.
