For the Jewish
traveler, the focus
of interest
downtown is the
synagogue and the
nearby Jewish
community center.
wanted it designed in a style
similar to a synagogue in
Paris. Today it is home to a
community of 600 families.
Outside the synagogue, we
stop to note the memorial to
the Holocaust victims, which
is set in the garden outside,
with a wreath of flowers pro-
pped near it.
Just down the street from
the synagogue is the Jewish
community center. "It was
once a very old hotel," says
Ms. Nathan, as we approach
an outdoor patio and then
enter an old stone building.
"The community raised funds
to repair it. Because it is so
close to our synagogue, it was
well worth it."
Inside, are the modern
kosher kitchen, the dining
area where kosher meals are
served, classrooms and
meeting rooms, and the recep-
tion area where members —
and visitors, too — enjoy kid-
dush every Shabbat.
Back outside, we walk up
the street and stop into Cafe
Wuthrich, a typically French-
style patisserie whose owner
prepares kosher pastries for
special occasions. Over coffee
and Swiss pastry, Ms. Nathan
tells me more about the
French-speaking Jewish com-
munity of Lausanne.
"Since 1952, the communi-
ty has changed a lot, and has
doubled in size because of the
Sephardic influence," ex-
plains Ms. Nathan, who was
born in Basel in northern
Switzerland and has lived in
Lausanne since 1958.
