The Great Outdoors
At Sybaris Gallery

"The Great Outdoors," fea-
turing artwork for and about
the garden, is the subject of
the Sybaris Gallery's summer
show which runs through Ju-
ly 13. The seven artists
participating in this exhibi-
tion have designed pieces
suitable for the garden, patio,
courtyard, deck, sunroom,
greenhouse or pool area.
Sally Goodman, a graduate
of Rhode Island School of
Design, creates garden fur-
niture and topiaries that com-
bine materials such as
chicken wire, concrete, foam
and ceramic mosaics.
Lee Hervey's work uses
sundials he creates. Mr.
Hervey's glass, stone and cop-
per leaf sundials comment on
the development of technol-
ogy and its effect on our
perception of time.
The bronze weathervanes of
Brent Kington create a
dialogue between art and
nature. Mr. Kington designs
his work with clean, simple
lines so as not to compete
with nature.
Jenny Lind's ceramic
sculpture is influenced by the
Megalithic stones found in
England and Ireland and the
Bogomil sculptures of North
Eastern Europe. She incor-
porates drawings and
hieroglyphic inscriptions into
clay forms.
Liz Quackenbush's sculp-
tural birdhouses, birdbaths
and planters are inspired by
mythology, ceramic history
and the clay itself. Or-
namented with detailed im-
ages of lizards, frogs, snakes,
flora and fauna, these pieces
have even been used as
decorative elements indoors.
The central placement of
Susan Moran's work is not in
the garden, but it is the main
subject of her silkscreens on
fabric. Ms. Moran likes
gardens because as land-
scapes they are intimate and
domestic and lend themselves
to close observation.
Michigan artist Gary Ku-
lak is known for his metal
chairs. Although Mr. Kulak
has designed functional fur-
niture and outdoor sculpture,
he has never created func-
tional work for the outdoors.
The pieces in this show are all
functional works for the
garden.
The design department of
Goldner Walsh Nursery has
created garden settings in the
gallery for the display of the
artwork.
Sybaris Gallery is at 301 W.
Fourth St., Royal Oak,
544-3388. Gallery hours are
Tues.-Sat. 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. and
by appointment.
