Jewish child within a four-
hour drive. "It was so rare to
have a Jewish event there,"
he explains.
In a project funded by the
Agudat Israel of America,
Uncle Moishy also performs
in concert, at no charge, for
seriously ill Jewish children
anywhere in the country.
One boy at Mt. Sinai
Medical Center in New York
City refused to talk after
surgery until he received a
visit from Uncle Moishy.
Mr. Newman, who writes
many of the group's songs,
attributes Uncle Moishy's
popularity to enjoyable and
meaningful music.
"Our songs are much more
than 'Clap your hands and
pretend you're a bird,' " he
says. "It's 'Learn about
Shabbat and see how much
fun it is to help put out the
challah and the wine.'
"Children are discerning.
A lot of their music has no
deep content. But we say,
Ilashem would be proud of
you because you gave up
your seat on the bus.' Chil-
dren understand meaning
and value."
In addition to the concerts,
Uncle Moishy memorabilia
includes coloring books,
board games and books
which reinforce the impor-
tance of performing mitzvot.
Among the characters on
the group's records are
Gedaliah, who is always
challenged to get home
before Shabbat starts, and
the slob who couldn't get out
of his room because of the
mess.
Despite the group's em-
phasis on religious practice,
Mr. Newman says Uncle
Moishy is not just for the Or-
thodox, as evinced by the
crowd the group attracted in
Charlotte, N.C. Even those
Jews who do not keep kosher
are generally interested in
having their children learn
what kashrut is, he says.
"Nobody will feel uncom-
fortable at our concerts,"
Mr. Newman says. "We're
just here to give informa-
tion."
Performing with Uncle
Moishy and the Mitzvah
Men is just a hobby for the
group members. When not
speaking as Uncle Moishy,
Zale Newman works in in-
surance.
The father of three, Mr.
Newman says he often ap-
plies Uncle Moishy tech-
niques to his own children.
"Sometimes I'm trying to
teach them and I find it's not
going so well," he says. "So
I'll write a song and we'll
sing it for the next 30 weeks
at the Shabbat table. That
usually works." El
