Israel Seeks
To Return Gift

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel is
seeking a graceful way to
return a poison gas antidote
sent as a gift by Germany
during the Persian Gulf war,
which may have proven
useless had a chemical at-
tack occurred, the Israeli
daily Hadashot reported.
Israel would like to give
back the thousands of
atropine syringes that came
with the gas masks and pro-
tective clothing sent by
Germany.
It turned out later that the
syringes were part of old
stock which the German
Defense Ministry wanted to
dispose of. The atropine,
which is supposed to be in-
jected immediately on ex-
posure to poison gas, was no
longer effective.
It is not known whether
any of those syringes were
contained in the protective
kits distributed to the Israeli
population.
The German aid package
followed a visit to Jerusalem
by Foreign Minister Hans-
Dietrich Genscher last
January, when Israel seem-
ed in imminent danger of
chemical attack from Iraq.
According to Hadashot,
the protective clothing from
Germany was also obsolete.

Orthodox Jews
Address Bush

Washington (JTA) — Or-
thodox Jewish leaders com-
plained directly to President
Bush about Secretary of
State James Baker's recent
statement that there is no
greater obstacle to peace
than Israeli settlement ac-
tivity in the West Bank.
A delegation from the
Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
told Mr. Bush during a 15-
minute White House
meeting that other issues
are far greater obstacles to
peace.
They include the con-
tinued Arab economic
boycott against Israel as
well as there being no Arab
country besides Egypt will-
ing to negotiate directly
with Israel.
Mandell Ganchrow,
chairman of the Orthodox
Union's Institute for Public
Affairs, also cited "the con-
tinued fratricide of Arabs in
Judea and Samaria, which
does not allow an indigenous
Palestinian group to come
forward, to come to the
bargaining table with the
Israeli authorities."
