EPSON - BLACK LABEL - PRODIGY - PREMIER - ALPS IMPROVE with hope and intensity about the school's future. "We were convinced when we shopped around that the academics were very strong here," Mrs. Alter said. "Judaism is also very impor- tant to us. Jordan really en- joyed what he learned from his Jewish pre-school. We didn't want him to lose that. We were not very observant at home. I want him to grow up to be Jewish. You can't do that by just going to High Holiday services or by know- ing that there's a yarmulke in a drawer somewhere. Yavneh is now important to him, and to us. It's part of our son." Mrs. Garber looks at the long-term importance of a Reform day school, saying that in terms of a commun- ity ' s responsibility to educate, it was important to have a Reform school as well as Conservative and Or- thodox schools. "Once the light has been lit in the child, you want to see it grow," Mrs. Garber said. "My son, Josh, can sit next to his Orthodox cousins and recite certain prayers and know what the Sabbath is all about, and they don't see him as so different anymore." Both parents admitted they were nervous about enrolling their children into something so new and un- proven as Yavneh. But now they are nervous about the school's future. "In August I was gambling with my child," Mrs. Alter said. "There is no question we did the right thing by coming here. Now I'm ter- rified that there might not be an alternative if the community doesn't wake up. We need to give the kids the option of a Yavneh or the Jewish community will lose them." And this is what worries Dr. Eichner the most. "These children are so precious to me personally," she said. "These 14 children are the future. The word needs to get out, because most people don't know what Yavneh is all about. They don't know that it's a school that exposes Jewish children to a vast array of Jewish sub- ject matter and integrates Judaism with their secular studies. "I don't even think in terms of the school not being here in the future," she said. "When I see these children growing and learning, then I know that we're doing the right thing, not just for our students but for the entire community." ❑ For a limited time only we're giving away a *High Performance, High Capacity, Hard Disk Drive ABSOLUTELY FREE with the purchase of ANY new computer system from LEVEL 4.
