are considering a private
school," Rabbi Roman
said. "They've already made
that decision not to be in a
public school. It is a moot
issue with those people who
are considering it. If you are
going to private school
anyway, can we find a Jew-
ish private school as a viable
alternative for you rather
than secular or even
Catholic parochial?"
Rabbi Roman said many
Reform Jewish parents wish
their children were involved
more with Jewish education.
This, he said, should be a
key to the future of Yavneh.
However, the concept of
Yavneh or any Reform day
school is something that the
community needs to get ac-
customed to, he said. In this
case, the break-in period
costs hundreds of thousands
of dollars for the institution.
"Now, Jewish parents are
seeing that Jewish edu-
cation might not be limited
to the four walls of a syn-
agogue," said Rabbi Roman.
Rabbi Daniel Polish, spiri-
tual leader of Temple Beth
El, agreed with Rabbi
Roman. He said Yavneh's
approach gives its students
an absolute sense that they
are inheritors of a Reform
tradition. There's a need, he
added, for a day school for all
types of Jews.
"I believe strongly in the
need for Jewish day
schools," he said. "That
doesn't mean I've given up
hope on the American public
education system. Most
American Jews will con-
tinue to send their kids to
public schools. But there are
a certain amount of Jews
who want a deeper Jewish
education than they can get
in supplemental schools.
They want their kids to
spend more time in a Jewish

environment. A day school
can give kids a sense of their
Jewish identity and in-
volvement like nothing else
can.
"Yavneh," he said,
"reflects the kind of experi-
ence that a school will have
in a start-up mode. We're in
the middle of a difficult
economy now. But you look
at Yavneh and you see the
strength of the school in its
curriculum. You see the
strength of the school in its
spirit. If you look at the
school in terms of what goes
on, it's a success. If you look
at the challenging end, the
challenge is in its growth."
