been asked for its input. The
commission is also meeting
with Detroit's rabbis and
cantors, lay leaders, school
representatives, teachers,
parents and students.
"The study is trying to find
out how we can best educate
all Jewish children in the
metropolitan Detroit area,"
says Robert M. Lask,
educators council president
and educational director at
Temple Beth El. "But you
don't want to take from
other programs."
He advocates funding for
everyone without hurting
established institutions.

dat Shalom Synagogue,
with 545 students, and
Congregation Beth
Achim, with 120, house the
bulk of the United Hebrew
Schools' enrollment. But the
two programs are dissimilar

Some 67 percent of Adat
Shalom's enrollment are the
children of Adat Shalom
members. Ten percent of
Beth Achim's enrollment —
12 students — are children
of members.

agogues' differing ap-
proaches to the possibility
that they will have to estab-
lish their own schools if the
Giles Commission recom-
mends, and the Federation
decides, to eliminate UHS
elementary classes.
At Beth Achim, 51 of the
120 students pay full tuition.
The school was running a
deficit of $64,000 for 1990-91
— a figure that is made up
through Federation's alloca-
tion to the Agency for Jew-
ish Education.
"That $64,000 would be
approximately 15 percent of
the synagogue's budget,"
says Beth Achim Rabbi Mar-
