Rome (JTA) — Evidence of
extreme vandalism that may
have occurred months ago
was recently discovered in
an obscure Jewish cemetery

woke up on Thursday with
last-minute amendments
that were very troubling to
us. They were serious
enough that we were seri-
ously considering withdraw-
ing our support from the
bill."
This would have been a
disaster for the civil rights
coalition. After much discus-
sion among Jewish leaders,
civil rights leaders and
members of the House, the
ADL was able to voice its
concerns through a series of
colloquies — scripted discus-
sions between members of
Congress designed to place
some of these reservations in
the legislative record.
Mr. Foxman said ADL
received what he called
"compelling assurances"
from some of the major
players in the civil rights
organizations "that we
would work together to
make sure these colloquies
find their way into concrete
action in the Senate ver-
sion."
But it is far from clear how
the Senate will tackle the
increasingly acrimonious
debate.
According to some Jewish
activists, Senate supporters
may try a radically different
approach to the civil rights
bill in an attempt to thwart
the promised White House
veto. Jewish organizations,
with their strong concerns
about quotas, could play an
important role in that pro-
cess as well. One prime issue
is whether Jewish concerns
can be adequately addressed
in the Senate bill. Another
key question is if Jewish
groups withdraw their sup-
port, how badly will rela-
tions with black groups, who
support the bill, be damag-
ed? ❑
